Neath's history stretches back at least as far as the Roman occupation of Britain. Llantwit, on the edge of Neath, is also the site of one of the first Christian churches in Wales. This was extended in Norman times and the Church of St Illtyd remains active today.
Later years saw Neath become progressively more industrialised, becoming home to both coal mining and the iron and steel industries. Today, Neath has a major petroleum refinery but most of the heavy industry has gone. The focus today is more on tourism and commercial activities.
