About Newtownards

The town of Newtownards is situated 5 miles south of Bangor, County Down and around 10 miles to the east of the Northern Ireland capital, Belfast. It's an old market town with a history that can be traced back to at least 1605.

Attractions in the town include the Scrabo Tower, which stands 41m high and is a memorial to Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry -- said to be one of the richest men in the UK in the mid-19th century. Another local attraction is the Somme Heritage Centre, which recognises the Irish contribution to the First World War.

More recently, Newtownards also has been the childhood home of a number of famous natives. These include television presenter Christine Bleakley and Ricky Warwick, the frontman of 90s heavy rock band The Almighty.

As you'd expect in a large town, Newtownards is well provided with local services, including car and van hire:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
