About Oldham
Oldham is part of the Greater Manchester metropolitan county. It's a large town in its own right with a history of textile manufacturing, engineering and coal mining. It is said that Oldham was once the most productive milling town in the world. Sadly, the last mill closed in 1998 and today Oldham is primarily a residential area.
Oldham itself has a population of approximately 105,000 people. The town's history can be traced back to 865AD, when it was established by Danish settlers. It remained a small settlement until the Industrial Revolution, when it grew into the world's leading cotton production location. To put this in context, in 1909, Oldham's mills were producing more cotton than all of those in France and Germany combined!
