Olympic Van Hire Shortage Likely Warns

A surge in hire demand caused by restrictions on goods deliveries in London could affect retail van hire customers particularly badly, warns

Businesses and individuals needing to hire a van or minibus during the Olympic period could experience shortages, according to leading van hire price comparison website

Summer is usually the busiest time of year for van hire and the extra demand created by business customers in the south east who require extra capacity for London deliveries could affect retail customers planning DIY jobs and house moves especially badly, as they often leave booking to the last minute.

A previous survey carried out by showed found that on average, van hire bookings are only made 12.4 days in advance of the pickup date, with 33% only made 4 days in advance. This doesn't leave much time to make alternative arrangements, especially for DIY house removal jobs.

Olympic Route Network Restrictions founder Roland Head explains the problem:

"Businesses delivering to London will have to deal with the restrictions imposed by the Olympic Route Network. This means that certain routes will be inaccessible for much of the day and night-time deliveries may become necessary.

In practice, these restrictions mean that many companies will need to hire extra vans, even if they are only carrying out their normal level of business."

Retail customers who are planning DIY jobs or house moves over the summer period could find unusually low levels of availability.

Minibus Demand Surge

As well as affecting goods distribution, the Olympic Games are going to create a surge in demand for minibus hire all over the UK. Both visitors to and participants in the games will have additional transport requirements, meaning that many rental companies could run out of minibuses during peak times.

Book Ahead is advising all of its visitors to book ahead as far as possible. The start of the Olympic Games is still nearly two months away and at this point, availability remains reasonably good.

However, a surge of last-minute bookings could cause availability to disappear rapidly, leaving late bookers without access to the hire vans and minibuses they need.
