About Rochester
Rochester's long history stretches back to the Neolithic period - evidence of settlements dating back to before the Roman invasion have been found in the area. Since then, it has been continuously occupied and the city's many historic buildings are a testament to Rochester's continued regional importance over the centuries.
Today's Rochester is home to more than 27,000 people and is located close to the M2 motorway. A largely residential area, Rochester has much to commend itself to visitors and locals alike. Rochester Cathedral, the Guildhall Museum and the Prison Hulks experience all provide fascinating glimpses of the city's past, as does Restoration House & Garden - better known as Satis House in the Dickens novel Great Expectations.
Also notable for anyone with a day to spare is the Chatham Historic Dockyard. This includes the RNLI's lifeboat museum, a working ropery and 3 historic ships, including the UK's last remaining World War II destroyer, HMS Cavalier. Visitors can also take a trip on the Kingswear Castle paddle steamer - an experience not to be missed.
On a more practical level, Rochester has several van hire companies that offer a range of rental vans, including:
