About Salford
Salford is a city in the district of Greater Manchester. With a population of around 220,000 people, it's a substantial city in its own right and has a history that stretches back more than 1,000 years.
Unusually, approximately one-third of Salford is undeveloped rural space. Although this provides an attractive amenity for the people of Salford, the main reason for this is that the undeveloped area stretches across an ancient peat bog, making development impossible.
In recent years, Salford's Dock area has undergone considerable redevelopment. One of the attractions in the redeveloped district is The Lowry, a theatre and art gallery complex named after the artist L. S. Lowry, who was a native of Trafford, in nearby Greater Manchester.
