About Selby
Selby's historic pedigree is made clear by the presence of eleventh-century Selby Abbey, which is reputed to have been the birthplace of King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror.
Archeological remains suggest that the town's history extends even further back, and that it was once a Viking settlement alongside the River Ouse. Today Selby lies close to the junction of the A63 and A19, which provide the town with direct links to the M62 and to Doncaster and York.
The town's shipbuilding and coal mining industries are now largely defunct, but many of the old industrial buildings remain. In many cases they have been redeveloped or occupied by new, smaller businesses.
