About Skelmersdale
Skelmersdale, or Skem, as it's sometimes known, is a historic town whose roots can be traced back nearly 1,000 years, to the Domesday Book of 1086.
As with many such towns, Skelmersdale's growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Workers flocked from the countryside to towns to find work. In the case of Skelmersdale, the main local industries were coal mining and brickworks, which remained an important part of the local economy until the late 1960s.
Despite its historic status, Skelmersdale was designated as a new town in 1961. A large number of Liverpudlians moved from the nearby city to new housing in Skelmersdale, giving the town an enduring connection with the famous coastal city.
