About Southend Airport

Southend Airport can trace its history back to the First World War, when it became a base for the Royal Flying Corp, the predecessor to the Royal Air Force. The site reopened as a commercial aerodrome in 1935, before becoming an air force base for the duration of the Second World War, since when it has been a a commercial airport operating both passenger and cargo services.

In recent years, Southend Airport has undergone a programme of redevelopment and the airport now boasts terminal and control tower facilities, as well as a regular rail service to London Liverpool Street.

Passenger numbers have risen following the arrival of easyJet at Southend in 2012, and the airport is especially busy in summer when First Choice and Thomson run package holiday flights from the airport. Aer Lingus Regional also operates flights to Dublin from Southend, providing connections to the USA, without the need to travel to one of the main London airports.

A full range of car and van hire services are available at Southend Airport, although pre-booking may be required for some of the following types of rental vans:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
