About St Albans
The Hertfordshire city of St Albans is home to approximately 65,000 people and dates back to pre-Roman times, when it was known as Verlamion. St Albans growth was helped by its position on Watling Street, the major Roman road from London to the north of England.
St Albans' name is a result of the beheading in the city of the eponymous Christian martyr in AD324. St Albans Cathedral became a cathedral in 1877 but dates back to 1553 as a church. St Albans Cathedral is now a popular tourist attraction in the town, as well as an important place of worship.
Other attractions in St Albans include its 15th century clock tower and the Verulamium Museum (the Roman name for St Albans), which houses mosaics and replicas of Romans rooms. The Museum of St Albans tells the story of the town's history and the nearby Kingsbury Watermill provides visitors with a fascinating glimpse of a working watermill and of historical farming implements.
