Watford sits in the county of Hertfordshire, a mere 21 miles from north-west London. Its proximity to the capital and to the M1 and M25 virtually guarantee its popularity and at the time of the 2001 Census, Watford urban area's population of 120,000 made it the 47th largest urban area in the UK.
The town itself lies close to the River Colne and is believed to lie on the route of an old Roman road running from the Midlands to London. Its first documented mention is in an Anglo-Saxon document from 1007 and it gained a charter for a weekly market in 1100. The industrial revolution transformed the town; the creation of the Grand Union Canal and the London and Birmingham Railway meant that the town enjoyed excellent connections and consequently much industrial growth.
