About Wisbech
The market town of Wisbech is situated in the heart of the Fens, in north Cambridgeshire. Home to approximately 20,000 people, the town's history can be traced back to the 7th century, at the time of the Saxon King Wulphere.
Wisbech's fine Georgian architecture is a legacy of the mercantile wealth that flowed into the area following the draining of the Fens, in the 17th century. The result was increased commercial agriculture and increased freight traffic through the Port of Wisbech, which is situated on the River Nene, close to The Wash. Today, the Port of Wisbech remains an important regional port, especially for cargos from other Northern European countries such as Holland and Denmark.
Attractions in Wisbech include the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, Peckover House and The Brinks, which have been described as the "most perfect Georgian streets of England" and line the banks of the River Nene. Elgood's Brewery and Garden is also popular - especially as a tour of this 200-year old brewery ends with a sampling of its wares!
