About Andover

Andover's usefulness as a staging point on the Exeter-London road meant that it grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries, growing from a small market town into a more substantial regional hub.

Today, one of Andover's major employers is the Ministry of Defence - once a major RAF base, the town is now home to a substantial Army presence and plans are underway for Andover to become the home of the Army Headquarters.

On a less martial note, the town itself attracts visitors for a variety of reasons. The nearby village of Thruxton is home to a popular UK motor racing circuit and the varied countryside around Andover plays host to a number of traditional pastimes - including fishing, shooting and rambling. For those of a more intellectual bent, the Andover Museum provides a fascinating look at the town's past, from Saxon times up to the present day.

Andover expanded rapidly after WWII and became a London overflow town in 1960 - housing people and businesses that were relocated from the ever-expanding capital. This expansion required new housing and industrial development and the result is that several of the villages surrounding Andover, such as Foxcotte, Charlton, East Anton and Finkley Down, have gradually merged with the town.

Andover is home to a number of thriving businesses and communities and van hire is readily available within the town. Local van rental companies provide a full range of modern hire vans at competitive rates. Examples vehicles include:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
