The Devon town of Barnstaple is home to around 35,000 people. Historically a major wool-producing area, Barnstaple benefited from having its own port - despite being around 5 miles inland from the Bristol Channel, on the River Taw.

In recent years, Barnstaple has benefited from the creation of a ring road to bypass traffic for nearby Ilfracombe and Braunton and from the A361 North Devon Link Road, which links the town to the M5 motorway, around 40 miles to the east.

Barnstaple's Pannier Market is said to be one of the best food markets in Britain and the town has won the Britain in Bloom competition multiple times.
