About Batley
Batley is a historic market town which forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees. It's part of the former industrial region of West Yorkshire and was once a major centre for textile recycling, in which scrap cloth was rewoven to make blankets and the like.
The town's population grew rapidly during the 19th century, but Batley's history stretches back much further than this and a settlement was recorded as far back as the 11th century.
Very little remains of Batley's historic buildings, most of the present town was built from the 19th century onwards.
