About Blackpool

Best known and loved as the largest seaside resort in the north west of England, Blackpool is also the largest town in Lancashire and has a similar population to the nearby city of Preston, to which Blackpool is connected by the M55 motorway. The town also has its own international airport - Blackpool International Airport.

Blackpool's growth was kick-started in 1846 by the completion of a railway branch line enabling visitors to arrive by train from Preston, then a large mill town. The introduction of electric lighting to the promenade in 1879 was a world first, creating an additional attraction for visitors. Today, this pioneering spirit lives on in the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations.

At its 1950s peak, Blackpool received more than 17 million visitors per year. Although the arrival of cheap overseas holidays in the 1960s caused this to decline, Blackpool remains very popular with tourists and caters for a wide spectrum of visitors, including families, stag and hen parties and conferences. The town's economy continues to be heavily dependent on tourism and the conference trade.

By road, Blackpool is connected to the M6 by the M55 motorway, meaning that travel by road is easy for both local businesses and incoming visitors. Van hire in Blackpool is also easy, with facilities for hiring all popular types of van located in the heart of the town:

  • Medium / short wheelbase vans - e.g. Ford Transit, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
