About Dereham

The historic market town of Dereham in Norfolk is home to nearly 20,000 people and lies on the A47, the main route running from east to west in the county. Nearby villages include Hoe, Longham, Scarning and Yaxham.

Dereham's long history is thought to stretch back to the Bronze Age, as evidence of an early settlement has been found in the area. Even if we restrict ourselves to Dereham's documented history, the town can still be traced back to the seventh century, when a monastery was built in the area.

Today, the economy of Dereham is largely driven by the needs of tourists and the town's residents. Attractions include the Dereham Windmill, Bishop Bonner's Cottage and the Mid-Norfolk Railway, a heritage railway which runs from Dereham to Wymondham.
