About Gateshead

Gateshead is near Newcastle, in the Tyne and Wear region of northeastern England. Often referred to as Tyneside, this area was historically a major coal mining area (hence the aphorism about the futility of "taking coals to Newcastle") and was also home to much shipbuilding and other heavy industry.

Most of this industry has now moved on, to be replaced by retail (the Metro Centre), call centres and other more modern service-based industries. Gateshead is also well known for its Angel of the North sculpture. Weighing 200 tonnes and standing 20m tall, this steel angel has a wingspan of 54m and has boosted visitor numbers to the area since it was unveiled in 1998.

The town is also known among film enthusiasts as the location of the Trinity Centre Multi-Story Car Park - from which Michael Caine throws a man in the iconic film Get Carter. Van rental is no problem in Gateshead - there are a range of van hire companies to choose from, all offering a good mix of vans:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
