About Hartlepool
The County Durham town of Hartlepool lies about 8 miles north-east of Middlesbrough and 17 miles south of Sunderland. It's home to a population of 92,000 and has a long history as a port and dockyard. Today, Hartlepool retains some of its specialist dockyard facilities, but the town's largest employer is the nearby Hartlepool nuclear power station.
Hartlepool lies just off the A19 and within half an hour of the A1(M), providing good transport links. The town suffered a considerable decline during the 1960s-80s as traditional shipbuilding and steel industries decline. But Hartlepool has since enjoyed a degree of regeneration and modernisation and is more prosperous today.
