About Hertford
Hertford is an historic county town with a history stretching back to at least 731 AD. Indeed, while many more recent towns in the same area lie alongside major trunk roads, Hertford's historic location is more rural. The town sits in the area between the A10 and A1(M) north-south routes, nestled between the rivers Lea and Beane.
The town's medieval history is on show for visitors, too. Timber-framed buildings and narrow streets mean that the A414 bypass is the only sensible way to pass by the town. However, any practical limitations Hertford might have when compared to nearby post-war new towns such as Stevenage and Harlow are offset by Hertford's rural feel and picturesque old streets.
Road and rail connections are good too. There are frequent trains to London Liverpool Street, Stevenage and Letchworth. The A414 bypass performs a similar service, providing a more rapid route to nearby towns such as Hatfield and connecting drivers to the A1 and A10 for routes into London or to the north.
