About Rochdale
Rochdale is a large town with a history of textile manufacturing. Its known history stretches back to an entry in the Domesday Book of 1086 and from the 13th century onwards, it assumed an increasingly important position in the UK's wool trade.
The Industrial Revolution saw Rochdale become a major mill town, thanks in no small part to the transport facilities provided by the Rochdale Canal. Along with the rest of the UK's textile industry, Rochdale's mills went into decline in the 20th century and today are largely extinct.
Despite this, Rochdale remains a popular residential area and is conveniently located for commuters to Manchester, Salford and anyone needing good access to the M62. The town's leisure attractions include the Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which tells the story of one of the original 19th century co-operative shops. Other attractions include the Rochdale Way, a 50 mile circular walking route, and the Pennine Bridleway, a popular route with cyclists.
