About Stretford
The town of Stretford lies within the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester and is less than five miles from Manchester city centre, Salford and Altrincham. It is best known to football fans as the home of Manchester United Football Club and does indeed lie within the metropolitan borough of Trafford.
Once a heavily agricultural area - effectively the farm and market garden of Manchester - the arrival of the Manchester Ship Canal at the end of the 19th century and the creation of the world's first planned industrial estate, Trafford Park, transformed the area into an industrial centre. Today, almost no trace remains of Stretford's agricultural past.
