The historic town of Swanley, in Kent, is home to approximately 21,000 people and has a history that can be traced back to at least 1086, when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Like many areas of Kent, Swanley took advantage of its good transport links, a proximity to London and a moderate climate to develop a fruit and flower growing industry. In Victorian times, the town also became something of a health retreat for tuberculosis sufferers in London. At one time, Swanley had several hospitals, although only one remains today.
Modern Swanley is primarily a residential and distribution centre for London and the south east. Its transport links are excellent and Swanley has direct access to the M25, M20, A20 and A2 roads as well as being on a railway route into central London.
