About Durham

This historic city of Durham has roots stretching back to at least 995AD. The city's noted cathedral and castle were built in the eleventh century and are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral in particular is noted for its Romanesque architecture vaulted roof. It has a lower profile with tourists than some of the UK's other more famous cathedrals and minsters, but is -- in the author's experience -- one of the UK's most impressive churches.

Durham University was founded in 1832, making it one of the oldest universities in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. It's a highly regarded academic centre and the city's location on the River Weir means that rowing is a major sport in the city. The Durham Regatta is said to be the second oldest in the UK, after the Henley Regatta.

The city of Durham is home to around 50,000 people and is popular for its quality of life and attractive mix of local businesses, arts and eating establishments. Naturally car and van hire is also on offer within the city. Expect a full range of rental vans to be available for hire:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
