About West Boldon
West Boldon and its near neighbours East Boldon and Boldon Colliery are collectively known as The Boldons. Situated around 5 miles north-west of Sunderland, the Boldons originally developed during the 19th century to provide housing for workers at the fast-expanding Boldon Colliery site.
The area's coal mines closed in the early 1980s, but it has since benefited from some redevelopment, including a Metro light rail system which connects Boldon to Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland.
