About Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport is one of Ireland's three major airports, along with Dublin and Cork Airports. Shannon ranks third among these three, in terms of passenger numbers, with annual throughput of around 1.75 million passengers each year.

The airport's history can be traced back to the 1930s, when Shannon's location on the Shannon Estuary meant that it was one of the last places flying boats departing the UK could stop to refuel before starting the journey across the Atlantic to the United States.

Shannon has maintained its civil aviation role ever since, although the airport has been operating from land-based runways since the mid-1940s. Today the airport remains a departure point for routes to a number of US airports, in addition to a range of mainly seasonal flights to short-haul European and UK destinations, including London Heathrow and Manchester Airport.
