Renault Vans Line Up At CV Show 2012

The new Renault Master

Six different Renault Master vans will be on display at the CV Show in 2012.

Renault will be bringing a sample of its latest van models to the Birmingham CV Show next week, along with a little piece of its history – a 1963 Estafette ‘Glacier’ ice cream van.

In total, twelve vans will be on show, including:

  • A long wheelbase version of the International Van of the Year 2012 – the Renault Kangoo Z.E.
  • New five-seat Kangoo Crew Van
  • A double cab Master Tipper, with improved payload (up to 1,384kg) and UK conversion
  • A range of other Master models, including both FWD and RWD panel vans, an 18.5 cubic metre Luton and a 17-seat minibus.
  • Six seat Trafic Crew Van and 9-seater Trafic Passenger van,  both in Sport trim with alloy wheels, body-coloured trim and upgraded interior specification.

Despite its age, the Trafic remains one of the most popular vans with SME buyers and should prove popular in Sport trim.

Ford Unveils Stunning Next-Gen Transit Custom

Following the unveiling of the all-new Ford Tourneo Custom minibus back in February, Ford has released the first pictures of the van version – the Ford Transit Custom. The van will go on show for the first time at this month’s CV Show in Birmingham.

The Transit Custom will go on sale late in 2012 and is a big step towards Ford’s goal of refreshing its entire commercial vehicle line up by 2014.

Lengths & Weights

Like the current Transit, The Transit Custom will compete in the one-tonne sector and will initially be available with payloads ranging from 600kg to 1,400kg.

Ford says that the Transit Custom is intended to dramatically expand the traditional customer base of the Transit with its car-like looks, comfort and driving dynamics. It’s certainly a dramatic departure from the more van-like current model and if it retains the toughness of the regular Transit it should prove very appealing to SMEs and tradesmen owner-drivers.

From launch, the Transit Custom will offer a choice of short wheelbase (SWB – overall length 4.97 metres) and long wheelbase (LWB – overall length 5.34 metres) versions, so that customers can select the amount of load space which best suits their business.

The Transit Custom will allow long loads to be loaded through the bulkhead for maximum length without compromising safety

Engines & Technical Stuff

The Transit Custom will be powered by the same generation of 2.2-litre diesels as current models. Ford promises that the improved versions of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine will offer class-leading economy and buyers will be able to choose from 100PS, 125PS and 155PS power ratings. Auto-Start-Stop will also be featured as standard on Stage V vehicles, delivering combined fuel consumption of 6.6l100km (42.8mpg) and 174g/km CO2 emissions – a reduction of up to 8 per cent on the equivalent current Transit.

Minimising overall cost-of-ownership was a high priority throughout the vehicle design and development, with key features including minimised maintenance and repair times, a 12-year anti-perforation warranty, and the longest service intervals in the class at two-years /50,000 km/30,000 miles.

Despite its car-like looks, Ford has promised that the Transit Custom will lose none of the practicality of the current model

“This may be a more stylish Transit, but it’s a more functional Transit too,” said Barry Gale, Commercial Vehicles chief engineer, Ford of Europe.  “The additional features we have built into the load space make everyday functions more convenient – so it’s easier for customers to do their job.

I’m a big Transit fan and have owned two – I can’t wait to see the next version when it hits the road later this year.

Mercedes-Benz Citan: First Pictures Of New Small Van

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the first press pictures of its Citan small van, which will be unveiled to the public at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover in October.

Mercedes announced the Citan in February but this is the first time that photos have been made available, rather than an artist’s impression.

Mercedes-Benz Citan

The new Mercedes-Benz Citan small van

The van is targeted at the urban market and Mercedes describes it as a ‘professional urban delivery van’. It is, in fact, based on the Renault Kangoo and will be built in the same French factory, but Mercedes is going to some lengths to reassure customers that will have all the qualities one expects from a Merc, including a plethora of safety systems:

Mercedes-Benz Citan - interior

Inside the Citan

The urban van comes with the Electronic Stability Program ADAPTIVE ESP® as standard, which takes the vehicle load into consideration.

This innovative dynamic handling control system in the new Citan combines the functions of the anti-locking braking system ABS®, VDC® (Vehicle Dynamic Control) which counters over- and understeer, and TCS® (Traction Control System). It also includes ASR® (Acceleration Skid Control) and drive and braking torque control.

The Citan will be available in three lengths and with three engine options: 75bhp and 110bhp diesels and a 115bhp supercharged petrol engine, which should be fun!

Unlike other Mercedes commercial vehicles, it will be front-wheel drive and will be the smallest van the German giant has produced for a very long time (ever?).

The Citan will go on sale in the UK in January 2013.

Volkswagen Could Bring 4×4 Crafter To UK

Volkswagen Crafter vanVolkswagen is considering bringing the 4×4 Crafter 4Motion to the UK, according to this article in What Van?

Alex Smith, who recently took over as head of VW’s UK commercial vehicle operations, told the magazine that while the Crafter would never approach the 20% market share of the Transporter and Caddy, they were looking at options for boosting Crafter sales in the UK.

One possible option was the introduction of the 4×4 Crafter, which would complement VW’s smaller Caddy 4Motion and Transporter 4Motion, both of which are already available in the UK.

Smith is also interested in boosting the market for conversions, especially dropside and tipper models.

However, he ruled out a major expansion of VW’s daily van rental sales just to boost numbers, telling the magazine that they were focused on “profitable, sustainable growth”.

Peugeot Shows Electric & ATV Van Models At CV Show

Peugeot Partner Tepee with ATV Grip Control system

The Peugeot Partner Tepee features the Grip Control system, an electronic all-wheel traction control system to provide improved grip on sand, mud, ice and snow.

Peugeot will debut an all-new electric version of its Partner van at the 2012 CV Show, which takes place at the Birmingham NEC from April 24th – 26th.

ATV – all terrain – versions of some of its vans will also be on show, highlighting the brand’s new Grip Control system, which I first mentioned in February.

Grip Control is an all-wheel electronic traction control system with settings to provide improved grip on sand, mud, ice and snow.

In total, six Peugeot vans will be on display:

  • Bipper Van (Silver) ATV with Grip Control
  • New Partner Van ATV with Grip Control
  • New Partner Electric Van Preview
  • New Expert Cell Van
  • Boxer Dropside
  • Boxer Van

Phil Robson, Fleet and Used Car Director at Peugeot UK, said: “Peugeot is on a roll with its cohesive van range that includes the established Bipper, Partner, Expert and Boxer. With Euro 5 engines, re-styled new-look identity and the new ATV capability, we have an attractive commercial proposition for customers, and we know for those that presently operate our products they enjoy great durability and value.”

Van Sales Continue To Disappoint – SMMT

The latest commercial vehicle sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that March was another disappointing month for van sales, which fell by 11.1% compared to March 2011.

Heavier Vans?

Both January and February saw declining sales of commercial vehicles under 3.5t, and March’s figures disappointed again, although a closer look suggests that the situation is not quite as bad as might have been thought:

Month March 2012 March 2011 % Change
Pickups 4,025 5,409 -25.6%
4x4s 1,418 1,399 1.4%
Vans < 2.0t 6,698 8,874 -24.5%
Vans 2.0t – 2.5t 5,440 4,863 11.9%
Vans 2.5t – 3.5t 21,586 23,529 -8.3%
All vans to 3.5t 39,167 44,074 -11.1%

Let’s look at each category and see how bad things really are:

  • Pickups: There’s no denying it, sales of these popular but expensive and thirsty vehicles have plummeted. Perhaps it’s a sign that small business owners who have previously enjoyed the tax perks of owning one of these (you can claim back the VAT but they’re like cars inside) are cutting back and owning more economical vehicles.
  • 4x4s: A small improvement in this specialist sector (it only includes van variants of 4×4 car models), which is positive – especially considering how mild most of the winter was.
  • Vans <2.0t: At first glance, these numbers are disastrous. But I wonder whether part of the explanation is the changing weight profile of smaller vans. As new model revisions of popular small vans are being launched, the plated weights of these vans are rising. Every variant of the new Vauxhall Combo, for example, is plated at over 2,000kg. I’m pretty sure the old model was plated at under 2,000kg. The figures from the SMMT could simply be a reflection of changing vehicle specifications.
  • Vans 2.0t – 2.5t: Sure enough, the 2.0t – 2.5t category saw a big rise in sales in March, albeit not big enough to cancel out the fall in sub-2.0t sales. It’s also interesting to note that on a rolling year basis, sales in this category are up 14.5%, compared to an 8.9% fall in the sub-2.0t category.
  • Vans 2.5t – 3.5t: An 8.3% decline in big van sales suggests that many van operators are extending their replacement cycles or shrinking their fleets. These figures are not catastrophic, however, and represent a 5.3% increase on a rolling year basis.
The overall decline in van sales of 11.1% is bad news, but I think that it is partly the result of changing operator usage and weight profiles.

What’s Happening To HGV Sales?

Sales of heavy goods vehicles are diverging rapidly. Artic sales were down 18.3% in March compared to the same period last year – but rigids bucked the trend, recording an amazing 55% increase over March 2011.

SMMT March 2012 - van and truck registrations

Van and Truck registrations from Dec 2007 to date (courtesy of SMMT)

On a rolling year basis, the figures smoothed out somewhat – artic sales are up 26.2% over the last 12 months while rigid sales are up 24.8%.

This divergence suggests two possible meanings. Companies are using rigids for work formerly done by artics – perhaps achieving fuel savings and greater loading efficiencies – or the underlying economic trend is downwards, resulting in weakening demand for the largest lorries.

What do you think? Are rigids replacing artics or is there another explanation?

I’d be very interested to hear from anyone with an insight into the massive growth in rigid sales.

Vauxhall Vans Top Retail League In March

Vauxhall Movano large van

The Vauxhall Movano

Vauxhall has once again sold more more vans to retail (SME) customers in March than any other van manufacturer in the UK, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The Luton-based manufacturer sold an impressive 2,494 vans to small businesses last month.

“Coming number one in the market for March and year-to-date is a fantastic result for Vauxhall vans,” said Richard Collier, Vauxhall’s National Commercial Vehicles Sales Manager.  “I am very pleased we have maintained our number one position from last year into 2012.  It goes to show that our market leading 4×4 offer of four years zero per cent finance, free servicing, warranty and AA cover has been a huge hit with our customers.  Despite the economic climate there’s still strong demand for our vehicles that offer low running costs reinforced by excellent manufacturer and retailer support.”

The British-built Vivaro is also the best selling van in the medium van segment with 3,531 registrations so far this year.

Vauxhall builds more commercial vehicles in the UK than any other manufacturer.  The latest edition to Vauxhall’s van range – the all-new Combo – is due to make its UK show debut at the CV Show in Birmingham this month alongside the full Vauxhall van range.

BCA Doubles Capacity At Measham Van Auctions

BCA Measham van auctionsIn a reflection of the continuing growth of commercial vehicle business at BCA (British Car Auctions), the company has doubled the sales capacity at the Measham Commercial Remarketing centre with the opening of a second auction hall. BCA has also improved the existing Commercial facilities with a new undercover drive through canopy.

The new purpose built facility includes a large undercover auction hall and rostrum with full Live Online and e-Auction capability, back office and vendor hospitality facilities. Sales run in tandem, which means Measham now has the capacity to offer over 500 light commercials through two lanes every sale day.

Measham is within half an hour’s drive of Leicester, Derby, Burton and Tamworth and is one of the busiest commercial auction venues in BCA’s network. Centre Manager Dominic Burr commented: “We are all delighted with this new facility which gives us the capability of handling a much larger volume of vehicles every sale day.”

The official opening sale took place on Tuesday 27 March and offered almost 400 vehicles, and featured stock from a number of a large contract hire, fleet and dealer groups including Lex Autolease, Alphabet, Lombard and Ford Retail. A strong turnout of buyers and plenty of Live Online activity saw over 80% of the entry sold for 100% of CAP. BCA has recently reported strong used van values, thanks to a shortage of good quality stock under 5 years old.

A substantial number of van hire companies dispose of their fleets through auction and BCA’s offering is one of the most advanced on the market – internet bidding is becoming as popular in this market as it is in conventional auction houses.

Nissan Cabstar Voted Light Truck Of The Year 2012

Nissan Cabstar

The Nissan Cabstar

The Nissan Cabstar has been chosen as Light Truck of the Year 2012 at the VansA2Z.com awards, which took place at Twickenham stadium recently.

The Cabstar was judged to be the best in class for its choice of wheelbases and conversions and its improved cabin space for driver and passenger comfort.

Neil McIntee, Editor of VansA2Z commented: “Performance has improved greatly since the current powerplants were installed under the cab — Cabstar has a forward-control configuration — and anyone who hasn’t sat in one for a while will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of room afforded the occupants. Cabstar is designed to be an uncomplaining workhorse and it fulfils the task admirably.”

The Cabstar is available as a single or crew chassis cab with a choice of three wheelbases: short, mid and long, plus two engine options; 2.5-litre with a choice of five or six speed manual gearbox and 3.0 litre which is equipped with a six speed manual gearbox.

There are also a number of conversions available – Dropside, Tipper, Box Van and a Freezer/Chiller.

James Douglas, corporate sales director, Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd commented: “The Cabstar is perfect for urban environments and delivers value to any business with low cost of ownership and exceptional manoeuvrability. We are delighted to receive this award from VansA2Z.”

vanrental.co.uk says:

Scaled-down trucks like the Cabstar are not historically popular in the UK, with most UK operators seeming to prefer scaled-up vans operating at the top of their weight range.

Light truck models are much more popular in more demanding foreign markets, where their toughness is a useful attribute – and I think they deserve to be more popular in the UK, too.

Vauxhall To Showcase New Vans At CV Show 2012

Vauxhall is to showcase its latest commercial vehicle models at the 2012 CV Show, which takes place at the Birmingham NEC from 24-26 April.

The Luton-based van manufacturer will be displaying its full van model range at the show, with the new Combo making its show debut alongside some of the new Movano factory conversions.

New Vauxhall ComboNew Combo

The new Vauxhall Combo will be on display in all three wheelbase and roof height combinations. The all-new version of this established model has a payload of up ton one tonne and a range of up to 777 miles, making it a highly practical proposition.

Limited Edition Vivaro?

Vauxhall has promised to bring ‘a stylish new addition to the Vivaro range’ to the show, in recognition of the role this excellent van has played in making Vauxhall the number one van brand in the retail sector in 2011 and the top van manufacturer in the UK.

Could this mean a desirable limited edition Vivaro – something to match the rather tasty Volkswagen Transporter Sportline?

Movano Conversions

Vauxhall Movano

The Vauxhall Movano is a rebadged Renault Master

Ex-factory conversions are now available from almost all van manufacturers and Vauxhall will be using the CV Show to showcase its range of Movano conversions.

On show will be panel vans, passenger carriers (in 9-seat Combi and 17-seat Minibus configurations) and the new factory-finished core conversions including Tipper and Dropside.  All core conversions come with Vauxhall’s three-year or 100,000-mile warranty on both the chassis and conversion.

The Movano Tipper conversion comes with either a chassis or crew cab and features a five-stage under-floor ram and a 50-degree tipping angle, powered by a 2kW electro-hydraulic pack connected to a remote hand-held tipping control.

The Movano Dropside also comes with either a chassis or crew cab and has a completely flat load platform, up to 4470mm in length.

Vauxhall On Your Mind?

If you are thinking of buying a Vauxhall van, then a trip to the CV Show will give you an excellent opportunity to see all the latest models in one place – probably more so than at most dealers.
