Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Premium Edition

Mercedes-Benz launches Sprinter Premium Edition

The success of last year’s 20th anniversary edition Mercedes Sprinter has prompted the firm to produce a follow-on model for this year. The new Sprinter Premium Edition will be on sale to retail customers buying a van through a Mercedes-Benz Vans dealership.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Premium Edition

The Premium will be available Available for 2-Series (3.0t GVW) and 3-Series (3.5t GVW) panel van models across all engines. In addition to the Sprinter’s standard specification, the new model will include:

  • Integrated Becker® MAP PILOT satellite navigation
  • Chrome effect radiator grille
  • Audio 15 colour screen infotainment unit
  • TEMPMATIC air conditioning
  • Comfort driver’s seat with inner armrest
  • ‘Premium Edition’ badging on the rear of the van
  • Outside temperature indicator
  • Full wheel trims

Also includes as standard will be  Crosswind Assist, which supports the driver in strong, gusty side winds through automatic brake interventions, Adaptive brake light, to indicate a critical braking manoeuvre, Adaptive ESP®, the dynamic control system that also takes vehicle load into account, and Rescue Assist QR code stickers, which gives emergency services critical information at the scene of an accident.

Every Mercedes-Benz Vans vehicle purchase also comes with free MobiloVan 30-year free roadside assistance cover across the UK and Europe, as well as a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Ale & Beer Mercedes-Benz Sprinters

Drinks wholesaler raises glass to super-reliable Sprinters

If you’re running a van fleet, there are few things more frustrating — and costly — than unreliable vans. This was the situation that Merseyside-based drink wholesaler Ale & Beer Supplies found itself in until it decided ti make the switch to Mercedes-Benz Sprinters.

Ale & Beer Mercedes-Benz Sprinters

The firm says that its previous vans were the cheapest on offer. Managing Director Chris Lawler admits that this approach was not a success:

“That proved to be a false economy. They were terrible – something was always going wrong. Not only were we were paying a fortune to keep them on the road, but it was also a huge job to meet our delivery schedule, and live up to the dependable service promise we make to customers.”

The vans have now been replaced by three long-bodied Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, which Mr Lawler says are a revelation:

“The Sprinters are so much better, in every way,” enthused Mr Lawler. “The price difference was negligible and they’re proving far more cost-effective to operate, as well as promising the long-term reliability for which Mercedes-Benz is renowned.”

The vans are 20th Anniversary Special Edition Sprinter 313 CDIs. The 20th anniversary model was introduced to mark the van’s 20th birthday and just 1,200 units have been made available.

The anniversary models offer a generous specification that includes air conditioning, sat nav, driver’s Comfort seat with arm rest and some chrome trim. The total cost is just £750, versus a usual list price of more than £2,000 for these options.

The vans are used to deliver alcoholic and soft drinks to pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the North-West. Chris Lawler says that after six months of service, the firm’s decision to switch marques “has been vindicated” and that the new vans are popular with staff and have proved totally reliable.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme concept

Sprinter Extreme concept could crush opposition — and it’s real

It’s a tough sell convincing Americans that European vehicles can make the grade when it comes to the rough stuff. If anyone can manage it, however, it’s likely to be Mercedes-Benz.

The firm recently unleashed the Sprinter Extreme concept on an unsuspecting Chicago Auto Show crowd.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme concept

While the paint job adds to the wow factor, the most amazing thing about this 20′, 4-tonne beast is that the vast majority of it can already be ordered at any Mercedes dealer.

The Sprinter Sprinter Extreme wheel4×4 is a well-established production model and by ordering a chassis cab variant with a number of additional options the Sprinter Extreme can pretty much become a reality. There’s also an existing 6×6 Sprinter conversion for hardcore off-road use.

US customers may not by as familiar with Merc’s off-road heritage as we are in Europe, of course. I suspect that’s the reason for this flamboyant display at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. If you’re interested in the nitty gritty technical detail, here are some of the highlights (bearing in mind that this is intended for the US market):

  • Payload: 6,400 lbs (approx. 2,900kg)
  • Towing capacity: 4 tons
  • Powertrain: 2.0-litre BlueTEC diesel combined with 7-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission
  • Scattolini ScattoMaax tipper bed
  • Beadlock wheels and off-road tyres with long-travel suspension

US customers can buy the Sprinter from Freightliner dealers and are able to specify many of the options seen on the Sprinter Extreme through Freightliner’s MasterUpfitter program.

Innovate Signs Mercedes-Benz vans

The signs are right as Innovate renews Mercedes fleet

Reliability, fuel efficiency and safety were three of the factors behind Innovate Signs’ continued loyalty to Mercedes-Benz vans.

The Whiteley, Hampshire based manufacturer and installer of retail signage has just replaced its van fleet with its third consecutive set of Mercedes vans.

Innovate Signs Mercedes-Benz vans

The new line-up comprises four 20th Anniversary Special Edition Sprinter 316 CDIs, a Vito 114 BlueTEC crew van and a Citan 109 CDI. All are Long-bodied variants and the subject of flexible, low-cost Agility hire purchase agreements from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

Founded by Managing Director Lee Devitt in 2001, Innovate Signs offers design, manufacturing and installation services, and works throughout the UK and most of Europe. Its impressive customer base includes the likes of JD Sports, One Stop, Schuh, Bensons for Beds and Harveys.

The firm acquired its first Mercedes-Benz Vans in 2009 and replaced them three years later with a second set, which have just been bought back by Pentagon. The new vans have lined up alongside a 63-registered Vito which is ‘out of sync’ with the rest.

It is the first time that Innovate Signs has operated a vehicle from the small Citan range introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2013. Mr Devitt explained:

“Because of its size we’re using the Citan for local jobs, and those where access and parking are issues. It’s proving to be a valuable addition to the fleet.

The Special Edition Sprinter was introduced to mark the two decades that have passed since the all-conquering model’s launch. Just 1,200 vans benefited from ‘Sprinter 20’ badging on the front wing and a unique option bundle including air conditioning, sat nav, a driver’s Comfort seat with arm rest, wheel trims and a chrome grille – this package was worth over £2,000, but put just £750 on the retail cost of the vehicle.

Mr Devitt said:

“We were getting horrendous fuel economy from the vans we were running prior to 2009, but since making the switch to Mercedes-Benz we’ve never looked back.

“Its vehicles are built to an exceptionally high standard, reliable, fuel-efficient and comfortable, as well as leading the field in terms of safety. Features such as Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist are very reassuring to operators like me, who are conscious of their Duty of Care responsibilities both to employees and to other road users.

Innovate Signs’ Sprinters will each clock-up some 200,000 miles over the next three years.

Mercedes Sprinter being serviced

Mercedes-Benz introduces fixed-price service for vans

Mercedes Sprinter being servicedMain dealer servicing costs can often seem like a moving feast — and an expensive one at that.

‘Amateur’ car owners may begrudge these costs, but when you’re running a busy business fleet of vans then skimping on servicing makes no sense at all.

To try and encourage more van operators to sign up for servicing plans or to book scheduled services at their own dealers, Mercedes-Benz has introduced fixed national service pricing for all current van models:

Sprinter New Vito Citan
Service A £130 £99 £99
Service B £250 £229 £185
Dust Filter £23 £28 £50
Brake Fluid £40 £30 £50
Coolant £48
Total £443 £386 £432

These prices are valid at all participating Mercedes-Benz van dealers and are subject to a £20 surcharge for our-of-hours servicing.

Steve Bridge, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK, said:

“We have listened to our customers and evolved our National Servicing pricing and Service Plans to be transparent, easy-to-understand, and above all, cost-effective. Our customers are focused on their businesses and daily lives, so we hope that the launch of our National Servicing pricing and tailored Service Plans removes one less worry for them!”

However, customers who are prepared to pay up front by opting into a service plan can make significant extra savings. According to Mercedes, a business operating a Sprinter and opting for out-of-hours servicing can save £261 over four years  on six services.

Service Plans allow you to choose out-of-hours servicing with no extra cost. Here’s how it could work out, assuming two services over two years (exc. VAT):

Sprinter New Vito Citan
National Service Pricing £443 £386 £432
Approved Used Service Plan £396

(£16.50 per month)

£348

(14.50 per month)

£420

(£17.50 per month)

New Service Plan £240

(£10 per month)

£192

(£8 per month)

£192

(£8 per month)

Mercedes isn’t doing this for love. Aftersales work is often more profitable for dealers than vehicle sales. It also helps dealers to stay in touch with previous customers and encourages customers to stay loyal.

Despite this, I have to say that these prices sound pretty reasonable to me. They seem on a level with the prices I pay to get my (older) Transit serviced at a local independent garage.

Of course, these rates exclude any repairs or non-services parts which may need replacing. This could cost more than at an independent garage. Yet on a well-maintained new or nearly-new van, extra costs ought mostly to be limited to service items such as brake discs, as a general rule.

The numbers certainly seem to add up in favour of pre-paying for a service plan when buying new or Approved Used.

Freezerent Sprinter 313 CDI

10 years and 100 Sprinters: Freezerent celebrates a Mercedes centenary

Temperature-controlled van hire specialist Freezerent has celebrated its 10th anniversary by taking delivery of a brand new refrigerated Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The van is the Wolverhampton-based firm’s 100th Sprinter.

Freezerent Sprinter 313 CDI

Founder and Managing Director Lee Dorward says that offering vans bearing the three-pointed star “can help to finalise [spot rentl] deals”. Mr Dorward also believes that Sprinter quality is superior to that of competing brands:

“We’ve certainly tried vans by other manufacturers but they didn’t stand up to the job as well as a Mercedes-Benz,” he said. “The Sprinter offers outstanding reliability, fuel-efficiency and driver appeal, as well as leading the market in terms of its safety features. Everyone likes to drive a Mercedes-Benz and when it comes to spot rental in particular, it can help to finalise a deal if the vehicle you’re offering has this high level of quality.

Although Freezerent has tended to buy Mercedes Approved Used Sprinter vans in the past, the firm’s 100th Sprinter is a brand new model in 313 CDI spec with a GAH refrigeration unit fitted by Vantastec.

Freezerent anticipates that new vehicles with single- and multi-temperature configurations will now account for a much higher proportion of future purchases. The company is clearly one of the many Sprinter loyalists who believe the German van remains the best in class for demanding jobs.

Lagan Traffic Solutions Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Twin cameras boost safety for traffic management specialist

Working on busy motorways and trunk roads gives traffic management specialist Lagan Operations & Maintenance little room for error. Motorway hard shoulders are among the most dangerous places to spend time on motorways.

Operating reliable and well-specified vehicles helps Lagan’s crews work safely in this difficult environment. The firm recently purchased six new dropside vans to be based at its East Kilbride depot, from where they undertake road maintenance projects all over Scotland.

Unsurprisingly, Lagan’s van of choice was the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The new vans are all Sprinter 313 CDI long wheelbase chassis cabs with custom dropside bodies. These include access steps and safety rails for staff working at height in the rear of the vehicle.

Lagan Traffic Solutions Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Area Manager George Miller, who is responsible for the new fleet, said:

“Although this operation only began around 18 months ago, my own experience of traffic management work goes back over 15 years.

“In that time I’ve seen vehicles from all the major manufacturers and it’s clear to me that Mercedes-Benz vans are head and shoulders above the competition. They are the most reliable by a margin, which means they spend a lot less time off the road undergoing repairs.”

To enhance the safety of the firm’s crews when working on busy roadways and construction sites, Lagan has specified twin, rear-facing side cameras linked to full colour screens on the vans’ dashboards. These automatically show a view down the relevant side of the vehicle if the driver indicates left or right.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has won numerous awards for safety and, with its reassuring armoury of active and passive systems, is widely acknowledged as the market leader when it comes to the protection of occupants and other road users.

Centaur Services Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Sprinter is only option for vetted deliveries

Leading UK veterinary wholesaler Centaur Services has completed its transition to an all-Mercedes-Benz fleet of 60 vans.

The company supplies more than 22,000 products to veterinary practices across the UK from its headquarters in Castle Cary, Somerset, and depots in Carlisle, Ivybridge, Letchworth and Stoke-on-Trent.

The firm’s first ever Mercedes-Benz Citan and Vito vans have recently jointed its fleet, but the vast majority of its vans are Sprinters. While most are 3.5-tonne 313 CDI models, the line-up also includes a number of 5.0-tonnne 513 CDI variants.

Centaur Services Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Over recent years Centaur Services has invested heavily in its warehouse and distribution network. With the exceptions of two mid-size Vito 111 CDI crew vans, which have second rows of seats and are used by its VetSpace practice management software division to attend shows and exhibitions, its vehicles make multi-drop deliveries of food, drugs and consumables.

Typically, a van will service 17 veterinary surgeries each day. The company’s single, small Citan, a 109 CDI, is based in Inverness and covers the Highlands, where there are fewer drops and much longer distances between them, so fuel efficiency is more important than carrying capacity.

“We moved to Mercedes-Benz because of its reputation for reliability and its vehicles have certainly lived up to that promise,” said Lisa Derbyshire, Director of Supply Chain and Operations. “Not only are they much better in terms of build quality than the vans we were using previously, but the drivers much prefer them and they lead the market when it comes to safety – that’s something we’re very conscious of, given our Duty of Care to employees and other road users.

Centaur Services’ Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are fitted with tracking devices and limited to 70 mph – each covers around 60,000 miles per year.

“The Sprinter is very cost-effective and economical,” continued Lisa Derbyshire. “Those working in towns and cities will use a bit more fuel but across the fleet they’re averaging 32-33 mpg, which is great.”

Bestway Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Kilos = Cash, or why one firm switched its fleet to Mercedes-Benz Sprinters

In the transport industry, weight costs money. It either increases your fuel consumption or stops you carrying as much as you’d like.

In the case of food wholesaler Bestway, the problem was that the latest vans from the firm’s previous supplier had put on weight as a result of being adapted to meet new emissions rules. This reduced the payload available to Bestway, whose deliveries tend to max out its vans’ payloads.

Having learned that Mercedes had managed to make the same changes to the Sprinter without adding any significant amount of weight, the decision was obvious: switch the fleet to Sprinters.

Bestway Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

By switching the traditional ply-lining to a lightweight polycarbon alternative, Bestway’s was able to offer a 3.5t van in Euro 5b emissions specification with a 1,200kg payload. This virtually sealed the deal, according to Bestway’s transport manager, Pretash Patel:

“This was a good deal higher than our established van supplier could come up with. Every single kilo counts in our operation, so the Sprinter’s payload advantage was crucial to Rygor winning the business.”

“Our move to Mercedes-Benz Vans has been a resounding success.   As well as using every bit of the Sprinter’s available payload we’ve had very positive feedback from our drivers, who say it’s a more comfortable drive than the vehicles they were in previously.”

Payload isn’t always a deal breaker, and for many operators the differences between marques aren’t significant. But in some cases they are, and this appears to be yet another advantage enjoyed by the Sprinter.

Biffa OneCall Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

New wastebuster service calls Sprinters into action

Waste management specialist Biffa has launched a new 24/7 emergency waste service which provides a single point of contact for customers who need to get rid of unplanned waste quickly.

This isn’t something I’ve thought about before, but it turns out that there are quite a few ways in which organisations can suddenly be stuck with waste that needs rapid removal. Here are a few examples from Biffa’s website:

  • Fire and flood damage
  • Freezer breakdowns
  • Waste compactor breakdowns
  • Chemical splillages
  • Product and packaging recalls

It’s easy to see how a company could need to get rid of such waste fast or else face costly operational disruption, health and safety issues or potential pollution problems.

The bulk of the OneCall services will be delivered by Biffa’s fleet of refuse collection vehicles and other trucks, but Biffa needed to enhance the capabilities of its mobile fleet of service technicians and workshop managers.

Biffa was also seeking a highly visible way of promoting the new OneCall service to potential customers. A new fleet of Mercedes vans met both requirements. The firm is taking delivery of a number of new Sprinter vans featuring a striking red and black OneCall livery, as part of a larger fleet order.

Biffa OneCall Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

The new OneCall Sprinters are 313 CDI models with all-over vinyl wrap liveries.

In addition to the four Biffa OneCall vehicles, Intercounty Truck & Van has supplied its high-profile customer with 15 Medium-length Sprinter 313 CDIs, six New Vito 111 CDI crew vans, four New Vito 111 CDI vans, 10 Citan 111 CDI Longs and six Extra-long Citan 111 CDI crew vans with second rows of seats, allowing each to carry a driver and up to four passengers.

Like a number of other companies, Biffa is finding that the ability to choose from three sizes of Mercedes van means that operational requirements can be met efficiently without needing a mixed-marque fleet of vans.

Will Gallagher, Biffa’s Supply Chain & Logisitics Category Manager, explains:

“The fact that we can now buy Mercedes-Benz vans in three different sizes is very helpful. Our mobile engineers are called into action on a variety of jobs so it’s a big advantage having the right vehicle for each task.

“The Sprinter, New Vito and Citan are all comfortable, safe and well-liked by those who drive them, while we are also very happy with the service we receive from the Dealer and the manufacturer.”

You can find out more about the Biffa OneCall service here.
