Dad's Army Ford BB at Dagenham

Dad’s Army Ford BB van is reborn at Dagenham

The recent launch of the Dad’s Army film has raised the profile of everything to do with the platoon from Walmington-on-Sea, including Corporal Jones’ van. The 1935 Ford BB van made regular appearances in the original Dad’s Army series and also featured in the new film.

It was, however, in need of some TLC. Before taking up residence at the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, BUC 852 spent some quality time in Ford’s heritage workshops at Dagenham — where this van would have been built when new.

Helped by a platoon of Ford apprentices, the firm’s heritage vehicle technicians completely rebuilt the engine, replaced the clutch and fitted new wiring looms.

As can be seen from the pictures, the van had already enjoyed a major cosmetic restoration. It’s now in full working order as well, making it a relatively rare item.

Stuart Wright, from the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford, said:

“This vehicle has a special place in British entertainment history, and is enjoyed by the many visitors to the Dad’s Army museum. It’s fantastic to see the van operational again and we hope it will capture the imagination of the younger visitors less familiar with Dad’s Army, as well as triggering happy memories for the older generations.”

The original Dad’s Army television series ran from 1968 to 1977, and “BUC 852”, the van’s registration, made its screen debut on 11th September 1969 in the first colour episode. This month it appears in the big-screen version of Dad’s Army with stars including Sir Tom Courtenay, Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sir Michael Gambon.

SMMT - UK Van Registrations Jan 2010 - Jan 2016

Van registrations cool in January with 4.3% fall

After hitting an all-time high of 371,830 in 2015, new van registrations fell by 4.3% in January, according to the latest figures from the SMMT.

Is this a cause for concern? Not necessarily. A small decline after five consecutive months of gains is hardly unusual. New van registrations have risen dramatically since 2013 and are perhaps due to slow down and return to more normal levels.

After all, I suspect that all the van operators who deferred vehicle replacements during the recession have probably now brought their vans up to date. This is certainly the impression I get from the number of new vans on the road, being run by businesses of all sizes.

Perhaps the best way to explain why a slowdown is quite logical is with this graph:

(Data c

Looking at the figures in more detail, 21,102 new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) were registered in January – the first month of decline since July 2015.

Demand for vans below 2.0 tonnes and between 2.0-2.5 tonnes fell by 11.8% and 23.3% respectively in the month, but better news came from the 2.5-3.5 tonne market – the sector’s largest – where a 2.1% increase in registrations continued the trend towards heavier vehicles, driven by operators’ desire to maximise fleet efficiency.

In terms of marques, the list of bestsellers contained few surprises, with Ford, VW and Vauxhall taking the lion’s share of registrations:

Commenting on this month’s figures, Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said he expected continued moderation this year with strong underlying demand:

“On the heels of a record-breaking 2015, which saw LCV registrations grow by an impressive 15.6%, January’s levelling off in demand comes as no surprise, and is indicative of what we can expect for the coming year. The overall market remains very strong, with business confidence high and the trend for home deliveries still growing.”

Automotive recycling takes another step towards 0% waste

One of the hallmarks of really remote places where few people live is often — sadly — that old vehicles are dumped at the side of properties or on wasteland, rather than being properly scrapped.

SMMT logo (copyright SMMT)Not only are they an eyesore, but they’re also an environmental and safety hazard as they degrade. They are also increasingly illegal. The End of Life Vehicles Directive requires cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes to be disposed of in an envrionmentally responsible way.

Car and van manufacturers generally provide this service free of charge, and it’s surprising how much of a car is recycled. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), manufacturers are now required to recycle and recover 95% of old vehicles.

Vehicle manufacturing plants are also under pressure to cut waste and resource usage. Less than 2% of manufacturing waste went to landfill in 2014. This represents a 90% reduction since 2000. Over the same period, energy and water usage have also fallen, by 48.1% and 43.6% respectively.

However, what if there is no manufacturer? What if you drive a Rover or Saab car, or an LDV van (in which case you’re already unlucky…)? Apparently, vehicles made by defunct manufacturers are known as orphan vehicles.

Owners of orphan vehicles can still ensure they are recycled by taking them to recycling centres, formerly known as breaker’s yards. The trouble is that if you live in rural areas, these may be some distance away. Quite often this isn’t practical — even if you’re willing to drive to your nearest recycler, you may not be able to get back home, for example.

According to the SMMT, there are an estimated 700,000 orphan vehicles on UK roads. All of these will eventually need to be recycled. To improve recycling rates and ensure the industry as a whole meets its environmental obligations, the SMMT has partnered with recycling company Autogreen to recycle all unclaimed vehicles at no cost to their owner or the general public.

If you have a vehicle which needs recycling, you can find more information here.

Lagan Traffic Solutions Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Twin cameras boost safety for traffic management specialist

Working on busy motorways and trunk roads gives traffic management specialist Lagan Operations & Maintenance little room for error. Motorway hard shoulders are among the most dangerous places to spend time on motorways.

Operating reliable and well-specified vehicles helps Lagan’s crews work safely in this difficult environment. The firm recently purchased six new dropside vans to be based at its East Kilbride depot, from where they undertake road maintenance projects all over Scotland.

Unsurprisingly, Lagan’s van of choice was the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The new vans are all Sprinter 313 CDI long wheelbase chassis cabs with custom dropside bodies. These include access steps and safety rails for staff working at height in the rear of the vehicle.

Lagan Traffic Solutions Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Area Manager George Miller, who is responsible for the new fleet, said:

“Although this operation only began around 18 months ago, my own experience of traffic management work goes back over 15 years.

“In that time I’ve seen vehicles from all the major manufacturers and it’s clear to me that Mercedes-Benz vans are head and shoulders above the competition. They are the most reliable by a margin, which means they spend a lot less time off the road undergoing repairs.”

To enhance the safety of the firm’s crews when working on busy roadways and construction sites, Lagan has specified twin, rear-facing side cameras linked to full colour screens on the vans’ dashboards. These automatically show a view down the relevant side of the vehicle if the driver indicates left or right.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has won numerous awards for safety and, with its reassuring armoury of active and passive systems, is widely acknowledged as the market leader when it comes to the protection of occupants and other road users.

Last ever Land Rover Defender rolls off production line in Solihull

It may not exactly be a van, but it is a pretty special vehicle in automotive history — and many of them have been configured as vans over the last 68 years.

The last ever Land Rover Defender rolled off Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull production line today, marking the end of 68 years of continuous production. The vehicle in question was a Defender 90 Heritage Soft Top model:

At the same time, Land Rover announced a new Heritage Restoration Programme, which will be based on the site of the existing Solihull production line. A team of experts, including some long serving Defender employees, will oversee the restoration of a number of Series Land Rovers sourced from across the globe. The first vehicles will go on sale in July 2016.

The Defender Celebration in Solihull saw more than 25 unique vehicles from Land Rover’s history come together in a procession around the Solihull plant, featuring the final current Defender vehicle off the line.

Land Rover associates were joined by a number of previous employees from the past 68 years to help celebrate this historic day. The last of the current Defender vehicles includes an original part that has been used on Soft Top specifications since 1948 – the hood cleat. The vehicle will be housed in the Jaguar Land Rover Collection.

Nissan NP300 Navara with hardtop

Nissan rolls out accessories for new NP300 Navara pick-up

The new Nissan NP300 Navara pick-up goes on sale this month (price and spec details here), making it the newest entrant in this very popular segment. It’s a good-looking truck and the driving experience is significantly better than the old model, especially on road.

Nissan NP300 Navara with hardtop

New Nissan NP300 Navara with hardtop

The only problem with pick-ups is that if we’re honest, the pick-up load space is often a very poor substitute for a boot or a van’s load compartment. Pick-up load beds are exposed to the weather, items tend to slide around uncontrollably, and are hard to reach without climbing in. Plus, of course, the open load bed of a pick-up is completely insecure!

These problems are common to all pick-ups, mainly when they are being used as private vehicles rather than workhorses, as is increasingly common. Tonneau covers and hardtops have always been available but Nissan has upped its game with the new NP300 and is offering its widest-ever range of load bed accessories, some of which it says are sector firsts:

  • A sliding load tray that makes loading and unloading the new NP300 Navara much easier:

  • A foldaway rear step that improves access to the truck bed
  • Tailgate assist – a system that lowers the vehicle’s tailgate smoothly at the touch of a button
  • A load carrier that allows vehicle users to make use of the space on top of the load space cover

There’s also a choice of three different tonneau covers — a soft cover, a roller shutter type design and a lift-up lid which operates like a car bonnet.

This roller design is one of three tonneau cover options.

Buyers can also opt for one of two hard-top designs, the more expensive of which includes opening windows, interior trim and lighting, a stop lamp and central locking.

Naturally, Nissan has also produced a range of styling accessories, including chrome bars for the front, side and bed of the vehicle and high impact lamps that can be fitted onto the bars. Also available are decal stickers, exhaust finishers, a shark antenna and alloy wheels.

Mike Thompson, After Sales Director at Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd, said:

“In the past it’s often been the case that new pick-ups have come to market and customers have then had to wait for third-party, aftermarket accessories to personalise and adapt their vehicles.

“In developing the new NP300 Navara, Nissan had accessories in mind from the very outset and so we have been able to ensure that even those customers taking delivery of the first vehicles this month have the full range of options and accessories available to them.”

Centaur Services Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Sprinter is only option for vetted deliveries

Leading UK veterinary wholesaler Centaur Services has completed its transition to an all-Mercedes-Benz fleet of 60 vans.

The company supplies more than 22,000 products to veterinary practices across the UK from its headquarters in Castle Cary, Somerset, and depots in Carlisle, Ivybridge, Letchworth and Stoke-on-Trent.

The firm’s first ever Mercedes-Benz Citan and Vito vans have recently jointed its fleet, but the vast majority of its vans are Sprinters. While most are 3.5-tonne 313 CDI models, the line-up also includes a number of 5.0-tonnne 513 CDI variants.

Centaur Services Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Over recent years Centaur Services has invested heavily in its warehouse and distribution network. With the exceptions of two mid-size Vito 111 CDI crew vans, which have second rows of seats and are used by its VetSpace practice management software division to attend shows and exhibitions, its vehicles make multi-drop deliveries of food, drugs and consumables.

Typically, a van will service 17 veterinary surgeries each day. The company’s single, small Citan, a 109 CDI, is based in Inverness and covers the Highlands, where there are fewer drops and much longer distances between them, so fuel efficiency is more important than carrying capacity.

“We moved to Mercedes-Benz because of its reputation for reliability and its vehicles have certainly lived up to that promise,” said Lisa Derbyshire, Director of Supply Chain and Operations. “Not only are they much better in terms of build quality than the vans we were using previously, but the drivers much prefer them and they lead the market when it comes to safety – that’s something we’re very conscious of, given our Duty of Care to employees and other road users.

Centaur Services’ Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are fitted with tracking devices and limited to 70 mph – each covers around 60,000 miles per year.

“The Sprinter is very cost-effective and economical,” continued Lisa Derbyshire. “Those working in towns and cities will use a bit more fuel but across the fleet they’re averaging 32-33 mpg, which is great.”
