New Citroen Dispatch XTR+ Offers Off-Road Grip

Citroen Dispatch XTR+

Citroen Dispatch XTR+

4WD (or AWD) drive vans are a small and specialist area of the market. Notable contenders have included the VW Transporter Synchro, Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 and most recently the Ford Transit AWD.

Citroen have now added a new vehicle to the mix – the Dispatch XTR+.

Although it isn’t a four-wheel drive vehicle, retaining the Dispatch’s standard FWD configuration, it does offer improved off-road abilities. These are delivered by a limited-slip differential which transfers up to 75% of drive to one wheel in slippery situations and revised suspension and steering setups.

This combination of changes gives the Dispatch XTR+ improved ground clearance, underbody protection and greatly improved traction in ‘soft road’ conditions such as forestry roads and unsurfaced access tracks. The van is aimed at the utility, forestry and agriculture sectors and other buyers who will appreciate the practical and cost benefits it offers over dedicated 4×4 vehicles.

Ford Transit Gains New Options for 2009

The Ford Transit is already one of the most adaptable and customisable vans on the road.

Four wheelbase options, 2 engines, FWD or RWD, 3 roof heights, chassis cab, double cab, panel van and minibus options and a plethora of other choices make it capable of being almost everything to everyone.

To continue this pursuit of ultimate flexibility, Ford have introduced a few more choices for 2009:

  • A new Double Cab Utility Chassis option allows for a double cab with the rear part converted to a fully-enclosed load carrying area (complete with unglazed doors). Afull bulkhead is available to seperate this area from the front cab. This option is designed to enable equipment to be carried internally and securely, without the need for a space-wasting toolbox in the rear load area (e.g. tipper or flatbed).
  • MWB panel van now available in low-roof , FWD configuration – says it all, really.
  • Transit Tourneo now available with light-tinted window glass to meet the needs of private hire operators (apparently local councils require tinted glass, not sure of the details – anyone?)

In addition to these new model variants, all diesel-engined Transits now come with Ford’s new Shift Indicator Light (SIL). This illuminates briefly during acceleration, indicating the optimum moment to change up to the next gear. Observance of the SIL should help reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, as well as wear and tear.

M&S Launch Electric Van As Part of ‘Plan A’

Marks & Spencer Modec Electric Van

Marks & Spencer Modec Electric Van

Bearing the slogan “This vehicle has switched to electric”, Marks and Spencer’s first Modec electric van is a clear statement of its intention to ‘green up’ its (considerable) transport operations.

The electric van, which has a range of 70 miles and a maximum speed of 50mph, will be used for urban deliveries in London. In addition to its near-silent, zero-emission operation, it offers a number of other benefits:

  • No road tax
  • No tachograph requirement
  • No MOT
  • No congestion charge

The Modec went into operation in December 2008 and should single-handedly reduce M&S’ CO2 emissions by around nine tonnes per year. It forms part of the company’s Plan A climate change plan, which aims to make its operations greener. The overall goal is for the company’s UK and Irish operations to become carbon-neutral by 2012 – an ambitious but impressive target.

I imagine another element of the plan may be the increased use of teardrop-shaped, streamlined double-decker lorry trailers. Replacing the old box-shaped double deckers, these are reckoned to reduce fuel consumption by several percentage points.

Cop Cars Halted By Misfuelling

It seems that Essex police isn’t the only police force wrestling with costly misfuelling problems – breakdowns caused by drivers filling up vehicles with the wrong type of fuel.

Avon & Somerset Police has had to fork out nearly £24,000 over the last three years as a result of drivers filling up diesels vehicles with petrol and vice versa.

The bad news is that the problem is inevitable – with drivers often switching vehicles. The good news is that major manufacturers such as Ford are starting to factory-fit misfuelling prevention devices to prevent diesels being filled with petrol.

Putting petrol into diesel vehicles is the most common type of misfuel due to petrol nozzles being slightly smaller than diesel nozzles. Filling a petrol vehicle with diesel is harder as the nozzle will not fit into the filler neck as easily as normal. This alerts most drivers to their mistake before they start fuelling.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the problem, misfuelling a diesel vehicle with petrol can cause costly damage to the engine if the vehicle is started. At the very least, the vehicle will have to have its fuel system drained – a time-consuming and hence costly procedure.

Gear-Changing Advice – Coming soon to a Ford near you

Ford Transit Connect SportVanOne of the easiest ways to improve fuel consumption and reduce wear and tear on your vehicle’s drivetrain is by timing gear changes correctly.

Ford are obviously aware of this and are now taking active steps to help drivers change gear better.

From 2009, all Ford Econetic model cars (Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo) will have a gear change indicator on their instrument consoles. The same indicator will also be fitted to Transit and Transit Connect vans.

The indicator consists of a light that illuminates when it’s time to change up to the next gear. The idea is that many drivers over-rev needlessly and without realising it, causing wear and wasting lots of fuel.

By timing up-changes correctly, significant cost savings can be achieved.

According to Ford, the system “continuously monitors data from the vehicle including engine speed, road speed, gear selected and throttle position to calculate optimum gear changes.”

In other words, it’s not just some dumb light that flashes automatically when engine revs reach a certain level. Sounds good to me – I will certainly look forward to trying one in practice and seeing how well it works.

RAC Reveals Strangest Breakdown Calls

It’s Christmas – it must be time for some slightly less serious press releases.

This contribution from the RAC reveals its all-time strangest call outs – including steamy windows (apparently 31% of patrols have arrived at a breakdown to find an ‘amorous couple’ in the car), rats in the dashboard and hungry alligators…

RAC Top Ten most unusual call-outs

1. A patrol called out to a car that wouldn’t start discovered the culprits; a family of rats living in the fuse box, who had chewed through all the wires.

2. One RAC member was mystified as to why they couldn’t unlock their car. On arrival, the patrol had to break it gently that they had the wrong car!

3. One member was trying to protect rather more than his car – he had broken down at the side of the road with over £80,000 in cash in his boot!

4. A patrol had to make it snappy when a van taking an alligator to a zoo broke down. Another speedy patrol helped restart a transporter taking a cheetah to a zoo before it was dinner time!

5. A hapless groom nearly didn’t marry his bride when he locked the wedding rings in his car – thankfully the RAC patrol saved the day just moments before the ceremony.

6. A £30,000 violin had to be rescued by a RAC patrol from a jammed seatbelt so that it’s musical maestro owner could get to a concert in time.

7. A kitten being driven to his new home panicked on arrival and escaped into the dashboard of the vehicle. An RAC patrol undertook the rescue, dismantling the entire dashboard, and recovering the kitten safely. Similar callouts have involved snakes, mice and hamsters.

8. On opening the back of a broken down van, a patrol was startled by 17 pairs of eyes staring back at him belonging to a cast of falcons.

9. One RAC patrol rescued a referee on his way to a crucial league football match, just hours before the game was due to kick off.

10. An RAC patrol rescued a police car, stuck up to its windows in mud having chased a runaway criminal across a ploughed field.

Overall, almost four in ten (39%) patrols have helped a motorist get to a life-changing event such as a wedding on time and one even reported helping to deliver a baby.

RAC patrol of the year Iain Vale commented: “Our patrols respond to around 2.7 million roadside assistance call-outs every year and this survey reveals the extend of the very odd and unusual nature of what sometimes awaits us.

“Whether it’s meeting members who keep their dogs ashes in an urn in the car, calls asking whether they can extend breakdown cover to their electric wheelchairs or a new kitten that’s panicked and hidden in the dashboard, RAC patrols aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and really can be relied on to come to the rescue of members.”

Ford Transit Headed For US Market & Going Electric

Ford Transit in British Gas liveryIt looks like the European Ford Transit will be joining its smaller cousin, the Transit Connect, in being sold to the US market.

The Transit is scheduled to be introduced to the US market in summer 2009 and Ford CEO Alan Mulally has now admitted that the European model will form the basis of Ford’s promised electric van, due to appear in 2010.

The lightweight, front-wheel drive Transit makes a far more sensible base vehicle for an electric, urban van than Ford’s heavyweight US van, the rear-wheel drive E-Series. The Transit also offers a more modern design and drivetrain than the well-established E-Series.

The introduction of the Transit to the US market is just part of a growing trend in the light commercial vehicle sector – the last few years have also seen the successful introduction of the Ford Transit Connect and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (badged as a Dodge) to the US market.

Perhaps the time has come for the automotive divide between the US and Europe to start disappearing, with fewer different models sold across more markets.

What Van? Awards – The Results

The recent What Van? Awards provided an opportunity for the best light commercial vehicles available in the UK to be recognised and celebrated.

So who came out on top? Here are some of the highlights.

Overall ‘Van of the Year’ award went to the all-new, big-but-small, Citroen Nemo/Fiat Fiorino/Citroen Bipper. Made by the PSA conglomerate, these are all the same van, just badged differently.

Category winners included Ford, who gained the Security award in both the Light Van (Ford Transit Connect) and Panel Van (Ford Transit) categories.

Iveco was given the Large Van award for the new Daily van – pipping Mercedes’ Sprinter to the post in what must have been a close competition.

Vauxhall won the coveted small van award with the Corsavan, the latest in a long line of popular car-derived vans from Vauxhall, who seem to have the knack of turning a small or medium sized car into a thoroughly enjoyable (to drive) van:

Finally, the rapidly growing market for buying chassis vans with bodies – as opposed to sourcing the body seperately – is worth a mention.

Citroen won the ‘One Stop Shop’ award with its ‘Ready To Run’ range, some of which are pictured below:

Ford were the runners-up in this category, as they were also in the small panel van category – with the ubiquitous Ford Transit, now in its 7th generation.

Stop Start Vehicle Review – Land Rover Freelander

I’ve written several times before about the new Mercedes Eco-Start system – formerly known as Stop Start.

This shuts down the vehicle’s engine after it has idled for a certain period and restarts it automatically (and near instantly) when the clutch is depressed. Similar systems are starting to appear on a variety of vehicles, including the latest Land Rover Freelander.

The Telegraph has now published a review of this vehicle with a detailed discussion of its Stop/Start system that I thought might be of interest to you – if so, click here for the full review.

The short version is that the system seems to work pretty well, although boy racers wanting to make fools of themselves tear away from traffic lights might be a little frustrated as they are forced to wait for a heartbeat while the engine fires up again.

Update: Here is a (very short) road test review of the Mercedes Sprinter ECO Start.
