Fleet Purchases: Peugeot Help EDF Energy Cut CO2 Emissions

EDF Energy has recently taken delivery of nearly 250 Peugeot vans (a mixture of 207, Partner and Expert models). The energy company is one of the UK’s largest and operates a 3,500 vehicle fleet.

EDF is targeting a 20% cut in its CO2 emissions by 2012, and the Peugeot vans are the latest step towards this. Not only do they feature the French company’s latest HDi diesel engines but these vans have not been shuttled around the country having extras fitted before delivery – as might have been the case in the past.

Peugeot have been able to offer EDF a one-stop shop – making all pre-delivery modifications at its regional distribution centre before delivering the vans directly to their end users – EDF. This saves considerably on transport costs and carbon emissions – helping EDF towards its target of lower emissions.

This kind of thing does seem to be a growing trend at present – more and more manufacturers are offering buyers the option of having their chassis vans pre-converted before delivery – where before a specialst body builder would have been used to build or modify the body after the vehicle left the factory.

Van Fleet Purchase Updates

The vehicles chosen by large fleet operators can be a useful barometer of their reliability and overall cost of ownership – although no doubt bulk purchase discounts can play a part, too.

In this case, we’ve got two well known fleet van operators – the AA and Europcar – who’ve each publicised their latest van purchase choices.

AA Sticks With Trafic

Until recently, most AA vans were VW Transporters. However, over the last few years, the AA has been renewing their fleet with Renault Trafic panel vans – and based on their latest press release, they must be satisfied with them.

The breakdown service has just taken delivery of a further 150 Renault Trafic vans to add to the 400 they purchased in 2006. To top it off, they also have another 200 on order for later this year, making 750 Trafics in total!

Sarah Dopson, the AA’s Vehicle Supply Manager said that “excellent load space” and “excellent whole life costs” were key factors in the decision to stick with the French marque – quite an endorsement.

Europcar Goes With Maxus Luton

LDV’s Maxus panel van seems to be gaining a reasonably strong foothold in the market. Europcar have a long-running partnership with LDV and must be happy with the company’s vans as they have just taken delivery of 50 LDV Maxus Luton vans to add to their UK hire fleet.

The vehicles are 3.5 tonne models on a long wheel base chassis and all feature tail lifts – always in demand with renters. Europcar are apparently the first national rental company to take delivery of the new Luton variant of the Maxus – but are unlikely to be the last.

Michael McInerney, Europcar’s Fleet Operations Director, said that the company have received excellent customer feedback regarding the “performance and comfort” of the Maxus range, leading them to expand their range of Maxus vans.

Europcar Takes The Hassle Out of Airport Hire

Airports are often busy, tiring places – especially at the end of a flight, when all you want to do is get on your way.

It looks like Europcar understand this and are doing their best to ease the pain. Europcar’s new Airside check-in system enables passengers travelling from Gatwick and Edinburgh into many of the UK’s major airports to have their rental car reservations processed automatically – before they arrive.

According to Europcar Operations Director David Alexander, “customers can check-in their car for rental before they board the plane, safe in the knowledge that the rental agreement will be pre-printed and the vehicle will be allocated before they even take off.”

All that remains to be done on arrival is to sign the rental agreement, pickup the keys and drive off. Sounds good to me.

Renault Uprates Performance of Popular Trafic Van

The Renault Trafic panel van (and its crew van variant) has been one of the most successful new designs of recent years. It’s gained a keen following amongst drivers who don’t want or need a large van and appreciate the car-like refinement and driving performance the Trafic offers.

Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic or Nissan Primastar white panel vanThe company have now introduced a new version of the Trafic, the Trafic Sport. This is a van for people who wish they could have a car, and offers a similar package to last year’s Transit SportVan. Alloy wheels, air con, metallic paint and uprated seats and stereo are just some of the highlights of this model, which is available in both panel and crew van formats.

Renault’s treats aren’t solely confined to the Trafic Sport, however, as they are now offering an uprated engine option and the choice of automatic manual transmission across the Trafic range:

Renault claims that under certain circumstances, the Quickshift system can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%. The company are putting their money where their mouth is, too – all new Renault Trafics and Masters now come with a 3 year / 100,000 mile warranty and 3 years’ AA cover.

New Berlingo / Partner Van On Sale This Year

One of the biggest successes in the light commercial market in recent years has undoubtedly been the Peugeot Partner / Citroen Berlingo.

With combined sales of over 3 million units its compact yet capacious design has had a strong influence on the small van market. PSA Group, manufacturers of Peugeot and Citroen vans (the same vehicles, badged differently) will no doubt be hoping to repeat this success with this year’s launch of the new Berlingo/Partner van.

Slightly larger (when aren’t new models?), the new Berlingo/Partner benefits from a 25kg increase in payload – from its original 600kg – 800kg up to 625kg – 825kg. There are also new safety features and the option of a new fleet management system to allow vehicles’ serviceability and mileage to be remotely monitored.

A right-hand drive version will be available from the summer – expect to see plenty around in company and rental fleets.

Van Emissions Data To Be Made Available

Over the last few years, car users have become used to paying variable rates of road tax and company car tax based on the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions of their vehicles. Similarly, HGV operators have also become increasingly motivated to buy lower-emission Euro 4 and Euro 5 trucks thanks to tax incentives and other impending legislation.

Vans, on the other hand, have been rather left out of all of this. Emissions data is not yet publicly available for most vans – leaving van operators unable to include environmental considerations in their purchasing choices. This is a growing issue for large fleet operators and it looks like industry pressure may be about to force van manufacturers to cough up the necessary information.

This article on RoadTransport.com discusses the BVRLA’s (British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association) plans to create and make public a database of van CO2 emissions – the kind of thing that already exists for passenger cars.

From 1st January this year, new vans must have a CO2 rating – but the manufacturers aren’t yet obliged to disclose this. The BVRLA is working hard to overcome the manufacturers’ understandable shyness (would you want to be the first to reveal your figures…) and expects to be able to make a comprehensive van emissions database available on its website later this year.

Vauxhall Vans Increase Market Share with UK-Built Vans

Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic or Nissan Primastar white panel vanWhile Vauxhall and parent company GM have always had a strong presence in the fleet market – their retail success has been slightly less consistent, at least in the van market.

It seems that the market-leading Vauxhall Vivaro (also Renault Trafic and Nissan Primastar) have put paid to that weakness, however. 2007 saw Vauxhall sell more than 30,000 UK-built vans to British buyers – of which more than 18,000 were Luton-made Vivaros.

Vauxhall’s overall share of the van market was up 1.1% to 15.7%, with its share of the retail market reached 12.2% – translating to an impressive 13,323 vans sold to non-fleet buyers – typically small businesses and tradesmen.

2007 saw Vauxhall’s 500,000th Vivaro roll off their Luton production line and the company remains the UK’s largest producer of commercial vehicles, producing more than 100,000 light commerical vehicles in the UK every year.

Van Hire Advice from National Van Rental

Modern vans are so refined, easy to drive and powerful that it’s sometimes easy to forget that you aren’t driving a car.

National Van Rental’s small business specialist Frank Reynolds has put together some tips to help keep you on the straight and narrow in your hired van. This advice is especially relevant if you are constantly jumping in and out of different vehicles or are travelling on an unfamiliar route:

Before starting your trip:
• Check your mirrors are all set correctly so that you can see as much as the road as possible.
• Ask someone to guide you out if you need to back out of a space.
• Make sure the doors are securely locked at the back or on the side of the vehicle.
• If unsure check the height of the vehicle with the van rental company.

When out on the road:
• Remember you will need a bigger braking distance as the vehicle will be much heavier than a normal car – so don’t get too close to the vehicle in front.
• You will need to take turns and corners much slower than you would in a car.
• Check your route for bridges and overpasses – you may find a route you use regularly in a car is no longer accessible due to the clearance height.
• Be aware of trees which may be overhanging the road.
• Ensure any loose loads are properly secured.
• Ensure that you signal well in advance of making a manoeuvre – and make changes slowly.

National Van Rental have a UK van hire fleet of 5000 vans – available from over 100 branches nationwide. To book a van, just click here.
