Diesel Drivers Beware: Using The Wrong Fuel Could Cost You £’000s

Note: If you’re looking for information about the Misfuelling Prevention Device – as seen on Dragons’ Den – click here.

More than 50,000 RAC members put the wrong fuel in their car in 2007, according to a report released by the breakdown company. 50,000 drivers – and that’s just the RAC members who requested breakdown assistance following their misfuelling mistake…RAC Van

As a driver of a hire van, you are probably more likely than average to put the wrong fuel in your van – especially if you normally drive a petrol car. You may be busy and pre-occupied with driving a large, unfamiliar vehicle – and using the petrol pump is probably a deeply-ingrained habit.

Unfortunately, putting petrol into a diesel engine can damage it severely. At best, you will have to pay for a mechanic to pump out all of the fuel from the vehicle – at worst you will cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to the engine.

Whatever happens, your rental company will hold you responsible for any costs resulting from you misfuelling – so it pays to be careful.

Here are some helpful tips from the RAC for drivers of diesel vehicles:

  1. UK diesel pumps are always black or yellow (petrol pumps are usually green).
  2. Many rental vans have a label near the fuel filler cap telling you what fuel to use – check for this before you fuel.
  3. Petrol nozzles are smaller than diesel nozzles. If the nozzle seems unusually loose when inserted into the filler neck, check again that you are using the right fuel. Diesel nozzles will fit easily but without space around them. Petrol nozzles will be noticeably looser.

Here’s what to do if the worst happens:

  1. Don’t start the engine – don’t even put the key in the ignition, as some vehicles start pumping fuel before the engine is started.
  2. Call the breakdown service provided by your rental company. Follow their advice exactly.
  3. Be prepared to pay a charge for having the fuel pumped out of your vehicle. If this is the worst that happens, count yourself lucky!
  4. You will of course lose the fuel you have just paid for when it’s pumped out – it will be contaminated with the correct fuel and completely unusable by anyone.

If you have started the engine and driven the vehicle before realising you have put the wrong fuel in, then stop the engine as soon as possible and call for breakdown assistance. If you’re lucky you will just need all the fuel pumping out of the vehicle and there will be no engine damage.Diesel and petrol pumps

However, it’s possible that you will have caused serious damage to the engine. The main reason for this is that petrol does not have the oily, lubricating qualities of diesel. This means that using petrol can cause accelerated wear and overheating damage in a diesel engine – bad news.

Finally, most of these comments apply to putting diesel into petrol engines, too. The only difference is that you shouldn’t be able to do this. Diesel nozzles are wider than petrol nozzles and don’t fit easily into petrol filler necks – so if you are having to force a fuel nozzle in, stop. You will be using the wrong fuel.

One-Way Van Hire From National Van Rental

Well-known van hire company National Van Rental is increasing the size of their UK rental National Car & Van Rental van fleet and offering one-way van hire between all UK locations to meet growing demand.

One-way van rental is ideal when moving house or perhaps doing a student move. If you want to arrange a one-way hire, just select different pickup and drop-off locations when making your booking (click here for an online quote).

National’s van fleet includes the following vans – covering the most popular sizes requested by van hirers:

– Small: Vauxhall Combo – small yet capacious, the Vauxhall Combo is ideal for student moves, small business deliveries and as a car replacement. It’s no bigger than a medium-sized car and just as easy to drive.

– Medium: Vauxhall Vivaro SWB – these short wheelbase panel vans are spacious inside yet easy and comfortable to drive – even if you’ve only ever driven cars before.

– Large: VW Crafter LWB – this large, long wheelbase panel van is basically the same vehicle as a Mercedes Sprinter, but badged as a Volkswagen. This makes it great to drive, huge inside and a very effective way of moving lots of stuff!

Europcar & National Introduce Rental Emissions Ratings

In a pioneering move for the UK car rental industry, both Europcar and National (both part of Europcar UK Group) are going to introduce CO2 emissions data into the group ratings for their UK hire cars.

While this doesn’t apply to vans yet (in fact, it’s not yet possible), it almost certainly will in time – enabling renters to take the environment into consideration when selecting a hire van.

Europcar UK Group’s Fleet Director Tim Bailey explained that:

“Our environmental commitment is central to our business development strategy and the addition of this information to our car groups is just the first of a number of initiatives we are developing.”

The move means that Europcar and National will include cars’ emissions ratings as well as their shell size and transmission when placing cars into groups. Europcar UK Group’s goal is to enable customer to “make more informed choices about the vehicles they rent and, as a result, help them contribute to an overall reduction in CO2 emissions.”

More Fleet Purchases: Ford Transits for British Gas

British Gas must be one of the most well-known companies in the UK – and their fleet of vans must be one of the largest, at around 10,000.

The company are currently renewing and adding to their van fleet with a total of 723 newFord Transit in British Gas livery Ford Transits – 85 short wheelbase (SWB) models, and 638 medium wheelbase (MWB) models.

British Gas’s fleet support manager, Martin Lock, said that “The Ford Transit was the best cost option for our business. It’s popular with the engineers and we have a long-standing relationship with Ford that works well.”

Interestingly, all vans are being specified with 70mph speed limiters to improve safety and fuel economy. All vans also have air-conditioning and single passenger seats – which when combined with exemplary maintenance and low mileage should make them very desirable second-hand buys when they come off lease in five years’ time.

The new vans are being delivered at a rate of 30 vans per week – and are fully-liveried and fitted with Bri-Stor internal racking and roof-mounted ladder racks.

Sixt Chosen As “Best Car Rental Company In Europe” – Again!

Sixt have just been chosen by the readers of Business Traveller magazine as the “Best Car Rental Company in Europe” – for the second year running.

This accolade is certain to apply to their van hire operation, too. Some of the criteria for the award were vehicle quality, hire process simplicity and price/performance ratio. The award winners were chosen solely by the readers of the influential Business Traveller magazine – meaning that this verdict came straight from the horse’s mouth.

Do You Realise How Much Fuel Duty You Are Paying?

We all know that a huge proportion of our petrol and diesel costs are taken up by tax, but how many of you know exactly how much is tax?Van Fuel dial - empty tank

I certainly don’t – that’s why I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion by the FTA (Freight Transport Asssociation) that filling station operators should amend their receipts so that the cost of fuel is broken down into fuel cost, fuel duty and VAT.

This is already common practice with VAT – so why not fuel duty?

Fuel duty is currently a staggering 50.35p per litre – probably more than most people realise. I have to admit I thought it was “about 40p” – as did most other people I asked.

The FTA’s Director of External Affairs, Geoff Dossetter, provided a simple example to show just how this duty adds up:

“With fuel duty at 50.35p per litre and VAT at 17.5 per cent then the cost of a typical fill of 50 litres of fuel at £1.05 per litre works out at £52.50. This consists of £19.51 for the fuel, £25.17 for the fuel duty and £7.82 for the VAT.”

“So, for 50 litres at the pump, we are paying £19.51 for the fuel plus an eye-watering £32.99 in taxation. And now the Chancellor is looking for a further 2p per litre in April!”

The FTA believe that oil companies and filling station operators should make sure that the public understand just how much duty and tax they pay on fuel – especially as the government are planning a further 2p per litre rise in fuel duty in April, pushing fuel prices ever higher.

Green Motion now offers green van hire

Environmental concerns are a growing factor in the vehicle rental industry, with both rental operators and customers starting to showing a growing interest in reducing their carbon footprints.

Most large rental fleets change their vehicles fairly often, thus benefitting from the typically lower emissions of newer models.

However, Green Motion founder Richard Lowden believed that it should be possible to take environmental considerations a lot further than this – and founded his company, Green Motion Vehicle Rental, to prove it.

Green Motion’s environmentally-friendly approach extends throughout their business – from their carefully-selected vehicles right through to their choice of cleaning products, office fittings, power supplier and working practices.

Green Motion’s cutting edge vehicle fleet includes vehicles from a number of different manufacturers, all selected for their best-in-class CO2 emissions and for offering other additional benefits, such as electric power, hybrid power and ‘Stop & Start’ technology that eliminates wasteful engine idling time.

Green Motion’s rental vans are exclusively supplied by Citroen, who are one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of low emission vehicles. Citroen’s diesel engines are amongst the most modern and fuel efficient available and the company also offers additional emission-reducing technology, such as its self-regenerating Diesel Particulate Filter System and electronic gearbox system.

We are delighted to welcome Green Motion to vanrental.co.uk and look forward to promoting their green van hire locations to our visitors:
