Van Hire Driving And Loading Tips + Up To 20% Off Europcar Van Hire

Europcar van hireEuropcar’s unique January sale is still running, and you could save up to 20% on van hire until for bookings made by 31st January 2013 for reservations up to 31st August 2013, excluding the Easter period.

To mark its January sale, Europcar has published a set of driving and loading tips for van hire customers. Here at vanrental.co.uk, we’ve always been focused on helping first-time van hire customers navigate the confusing world of vans — and Europcar UK Group Managing Director Ken McCall clearly shares our aims:

“… we know that many of our customers rarely drive a van, we’re offering some useful tips for loading and driving vans so that it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience.”

Driving a van

Driving a van for the first time can be daunting, but its doesn’t need to be traumatic! Check out our guide to driving a van for the first time, or take a look at Europcar’s tips below, if you are about to become a white van man (or woman!) for the first time:

  1. Vans are bigger than cars – Be aware of the width, length and height of the vehicle when hiring a van, especially if you’re not used to driving one.
  2.  Take corners slowly – it is possible for a heavy loads to move around if you take the corner too fast.
  3. Space for corners – Remember that larger vans need more room to turn so give yourself plenty of time and space when taking corners.
  4. Stopping distance – Remember that the larger or heavier the vehicle, the longer it takes to stop, especially in icy or wet conditions.
  5. Blind side – Watch out for cyclists and bikers who might be tempted to overtake on the blind side.

Loading a van or moving house?

Europcar van hire moving houseOne of the best reasons to hire a van is to save money on the cost of moving house — I know I’ve done it a few times. Of course, packing and loading your own stuff into a van means that you are responsible if anything gets damaged, so it’s important to take care as you do it.

Luckily, we’ve produced a guide to DIY removals that covers everything you need to know, from choosing the right size van through to packing and loading your stuff so it all stays safe while you’re on the road. Click here for our DIY removals guide, or take a look at Europcar’s tips for loading a van:

  1. Start loading your items at the front of the van and work your way to the back.
  2. Spread the load evenly across the base, uneven loads can have a massive effect on a van’s stability.
  3. Keep all items stacked as tightly as possible to keep everything from shifting during the drive.
  4. When loading a van, place heavy items on the floor of the vehicle, and plastic and lighter things on top of the heavier ones.
  5. You may have to take apart things like tables and desks in order to load everything tightly and to ensure safe transport.
  6. Be careful not to scoot or drag furniture in the van as damage may occur to sofas, table legs and dresser bottoms.
  7. When lifting a heavy load bend your legs not your back.

Europcar Adds Van Hire At Major Airports

Europcar van hireEuropcar van hire is now available from the company’s branches at five major UK airport — Heathrow, Stansted, Newcastle, Luton and Birmingham

The decision to add airport locations to the Europcar Van network has been prompted by an increasing demand from both businesses and leisure customers for vans at these key commercial hubs.  It also reflects the growth in logistics business originating from airports.

“In the last year we have seen significant growth in van rental by logistics companies”, explained Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar UK Group.  “We believe this is largely due to the huge upturn in online and home shopping over the last year or so.  But we think it’s also attributable to the fact that logistics companies want the flexibility of van rental – rather than ownership – so that costs are matched to demand. In addition, these new airport locations increase accessibility of vans for our leisure customers.”

Europcar Vans are now available at the company’s Heathrow Airport, Luton Airport, Stansted Airport, Birmingham Airport and Newcastle Airport locations.

“This is all about choice”, added Ken McCall.  “We know that there a number of businesses operating in and around these airport locations.  Therefore, by adding vans to our fleet at those branches, we are simply giving these businesses the same range of choice as organisations operating down-town.

“We also understand that consumers want easy access to hire vans, which is why opening at these airport locations, with their extended opening hours and easy transport links, is a perfect fit for our customers”

All Europcar vehicles are less than twelve months old, making it the youngest van fleet in the country. The vans are also fully maintained to manufacturer standards, ensuring they run efficiently and Europcar’s corporate customers benefit from a fleet they can rely on.

Europcar UK boss Ken McCall says its the perfect deal for parents helping their children to move back to university:

“When it’s time to head back to University, there’s always the challenge of getting everything in the family car – or having to do several trips” explained Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar Group UK. “So rather than overloading the car, Mum and Dad can opt for van hire to ensure everything that’s needed can be transported in one easy trip.”

Although Europcar’s minimum van hire age is 25, some companies will hire vans to drivers aged 21 and upwards, meaning that older students will be able to drive themselves back on a one-way hire, rather than having to get Mum and Dad to do the driving and return the van.

Van News In Brief: 06/07/2012

Mitsubishi Brings Back L200 Trojan

Mitsubishi L200 Trojan Double Cab

Mitsubishi L200 Trojan Double Cab

The Mitsubishi L200 is probably the car that defines the modern pick-up trend. Hugely popular, its double cab was one of the first to offer car-like levels of comfort with genuine off-road, load-carrying ability.

Mitsubishi has capitalised on the popularity of this model with lifestyle buyers by introducing a steady stream of special editions, such as the recent Barbarian Black. Its now brought back another popular edition, the L200 Trojan Double Cab.

The Trojan comes loaded with accessories and the new model is far more powerful than the old one, delivering 30% more power (up from 136bhp to 175bhp) and 27% more torque (up from 314Nm to 400Nm). In addition to this, the 12MY Trojan is also Euro 5 compliant.

Europcar Staff Take To Two Wheels

Traffic in London is bad enough at the best of times, but it’s about to get much worse, as the London Olympics and Paralympics bring thousands of extra visitors and vehicles to the cities streets.

In addition, the Olympic Route Network means that ordinary road users, like delivery drivers and private motorists, won’t even be able to use half the roads in London (click here for a handy Olympic Route Network delivery planner).

If all of this wasn’t enough, demand for car and van rental is likely to soar during the Olympic period, with many of these customers needing to have vehicles delivered and collected from their premises. This means that rental companies are faced with the prospect of having their delivery drivers stuck in traffic and unable to move around as quickly as usual.

Europcar has taken a novel approach to solving this problem and is equipping its delivery drivers with electric bikes to help them get around as fast as possible. The bikes are folding models that fit into the boot of a car, enabling drivers to combine the best of both worlds and get around London as fast as possible — without adding to traffic congestion themselves.

4 New Isuzu Truck Dealers For Thames Valley

Isuzu Truck range

The Isuzu Truck range

Isuzu Truck has added The Cordwallis Group to its dealer roster, providing the brand with four new dealers covering the Thames Valley.

The long-established, family-owned Cordwallis Group opened its doors as an Isuzu Truck dealer in Reading and Heathrow on Monday 25th June, whilst the remaining 2 branches at Maidenhead and Eynsham near Oxford will become full dealers 1 month later on Monday 23rd July.

As Keith Child, marketing director at Isuzu Truck explains:

“The Thames Valley region represents a significant geographical area for Isuzu Truck and we are extremely pleased to welcome The Cordwallis Group into the Isuzu Truck dealer network. The group has a vast experience of commercial vehicles from lights to heavy weights through four established locations.

Europcar Boosts Van Hire Fleet

Europcar is set to expand its rental van fleet following double-digit growth in demand for hire vans in the first half of 2012.

The car and van hire company is to place particular emphasis on supporting the flexible rental requirements of the logistics and courier sectors, which experience increasingly variable and strong demand due to the growth of the online home shopping sector — internet shopping, to you and me.

According to Europcar UK MD Ken McCall:

“We’ve seen a huge surge in demand for vans over recent months and we are responding by increasing the size and quality of our van fleet with the latest models to ensure our range includes the latest in fuel efficiency technology”

“As the trend for online shopping continues logistics companies have reported a spike in demand for delivery services. But it’s hard for businesses like this to instantly increase their own fleet capacity. That’s where short-term rental fits in and Europcar has been working hard to help these companies capitalise on the current market opportunities, by complementing their core fleet at short notice.”

The new additions to Europcar’s van fleet will include the compact Vauxhall Combo – winner Best New Van at the 2012 Fleet World Honours – and the Peugeot Partner. The company also plans to increase the number of larger models, such as the Southampton-built Ford Transit and the Luton-made Vauxhall Vivaro.

Nearly all of the new vehicles feature Euro 5 technology, the most fuel efficient engine on the market. Low-emission vans such as the Nissan NV200, with emissions under 150g/km, help companies comply with government legislation on CO2 emissions, as well as enabling them to save on tax and congestion charges – such as the low emission zone in London – on high polluting vehicles.

Speaking of the growing importance of environmental issues, McCall say, “We have seen more companies request low CO2 and more eco-friendly vans.”

All Europcar vans are on average 9 months old, and with the new vans that have been introduced, Europcar’s light commercial fleet is one of the youngest in the country. The vans are also fully maintained to manufacturer standards, ensuring they run efficiently so that Europcar’s corporate customers can access vehicles on which they can rely.

Europcar Now Accepting Tesco Clubcard Points

Europcar logoTesco customers can now exchange their Clubcard points for Europcar car and van hire tokens.

Under the new agreement, Europcar has become a Tesco Clubcard Rewards partner, offering 17 million Tesco Clubcard customers the opportunity to use their points for car hire reservations.  With a focus on quality and convenience, Europcar is helping Tesco bring new added value services to its Clubcard customers.

Tesco’s Clubcard rewards scheme allows customers to exchange their Clubcard vouchers, accumulated as points through shopping, and exchange them for Clubcard Rewards tokens, worth up to four times the value. These tokens can then be used with a range of over 600 partner rewards.

As Europcar becomes a new Rewards partner, Tesco Clubcard customers can now exchange their vouchers for car and van rental tokens, allowing them to get out and about for less and get the most from their Clubcard.

Ian Simkins, Clubcard Rewards Director of Tesco, says,:

“Our partnership with Europcar means Tesco Clubcard customers can book quality vehicle hire for everything from holidays and city breaks to moving house or getting to the airport. Europcar offers a simple and inclusive booking system, ensuring our customers can get away for less without any hassle.”

Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar Group UK adds:

“Tesco is the biggest brand in the country, with a huge customer base.  Its history of delivering leading-edge offerings, including pioneering loyalty programmes with Clubcard, makes it the perfect partner for Europcar as we have a proven track record for being first to market with innovative new products for our customers.

“We are delighted to have teamed up with Tesco as a Clubcard Rewards partner, the new partnership will mean every time a Tesco customer shops, they can be saving to enjoy the quality and convenience of Europcar vehicle hire.”

We say: Europcar generally offers very competitive prices anyway and this deal makes them even more attractive. Using your Clubcard points in this way is much better value than spending them instore, as the vouchers are for up to four times the value of the points.

Europcar Launches iPhone App

Europcar logoEuropcar has launched a free iPhone app to enable customers to arrange vehicle hire from their iPhones.

The app enables iPhone users to reserve vehicles or search for details on any of Europcar’s 5,300 stations across 150 countries worldwide, including the UK. I’m not sure whether it works for vans as well as cars or not, yet. (I’m checking this with Europcar and will update this post when I get an answer).

Update: The app is currently for cars only, but van booking will be added at some point in the future – watch this space.

Once booked, vehicle hire is confirmed immediately over the phone, via sms or email. The service is available in seven languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
