Hinckley Van Rental now offers 3.5t vehicle transporters

Hinckley Van Rental vehicle transporter

Longstanding vanrental.co.uk advertiser Hinckley Van Rental has recently added 3.5t vehicle transporters to its fleet.

Capable of carrying cars and small vans weighing up to 1,500kg, these Citroen transporters are a flexible and useful addition to the firm’s fleet, enabling rental customers to transport vehicles themselves.

Each transporter comes equipped with straps, a winch and orange safety beacons, and Hinckley Van Rental staff will show all customers how to use the transporter safely when they collect the vehicle, so first-timers are welcome.

Examples of target customers are people who have bought untaxed or non-running cars — perhaps on eBay or at auction.

The transporters can be driven on a standard category ‘B’ car licences, but if you are thinking of hiring one of these transporters, you should make sure the weight of the vehicle you wish to carry does not exceed the transporter’s 1,500kg payload: many 4x4s, pick-ups and some large cars weigh considerably more than this. (For example, a Mitsubishi L200 pick-up weighs around 1,800kg, unladen).

Very few van hire companies offer vehicle transporters, so I suspect demand for Hinckley’s transporters will be strong — advanced booking is advised.

Hinckley Van Rental is located on Barleyfield, just of the A47 on the north side of Hinckley. Click here for a list of van hire branches in Hinckley.

Europcar spring sale: van hire from £17 per day

Europcar van hire

Hire a van with Europcar from just £14.50 per day

Hire a van from just £17 per day in the Europcar spring sale!

Europcar’s spring sale is now underway.

Van hire booked before 31st May, for reservations up to 30th September 2014, starts from just £17 per day.

If you’re moving house or planning some major DIY this spring, then this deal is worth a closer look.

Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar UK Group says:

“The days are getting longer and the weather’s warming up, which means it’s time to do those jobs around the house. Whether it’s de-cluttering, moving house or tackling some DIY, a van can offer the extra space to get the job done in just one journey.”

It’s also worth noting that because sale bookings can be made for as far ahead as September 30, this could be a good chance to lock in a cheap rate for student removals.

If you’re planning to help your child move into university later this year (or back home at the end of the summer term), then now is the perfect chance to book at a cheap rate — before the summer surge in demand makes discounts hard to find.

Europcar’s flexible service means that one-way hire, additional drivers and overnight hire are all available — so you should be able to organise something to match your requirements. Europcar has branches all over the UK — see here for a list of Europcar locations.

Terms and conditions do apply to this offer — see Europcar’s website for details.

Europcar takes delivery of 95 Luton vans in ‘spacious’ livery

Europcar Iveco Luton vans at Heathrow

Two of Europcar’s new Iveco Luton vans at the firm’s Heathrow Airport branch.

Europcar is taking delivery of 95 new 3.5 tonne Iveco Daily Luton vans in 2014, with the first 20 vehicles already in service, in the rental giant’s bold new liveries.

The vans’ liveries feature bulky objects such as bath tubs and, er, UFOs, and are designed to highlight how much you can fit inside a luton van — despite the fact they can be driven by anyone with a standard car licence (excluding automatic licence holders).

The new vans will be available from Europcar locations across the UK, and are expected to be particularly popular in town and city centre locations, where demand is high for vehicles to assist with moving home and DIY projects.

Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar UK Group explains:

“The Dailys are a really important addition to our fleet. They offer a great payload capacity, plus the combination of the Luton body and tail-lift makes light work of moving even big loads for our customers.

“The majority of the demand for this type of vehicle comes from urban areas, so the Daily’s tight turning circle also really comes into its own.”

 The technical stuff

Each Daily 35C13 chassis cab benefits from a 3,750mm long wheelbase and features bodywork by Alloy Bodies, Iveco’s Daily DriveAway Options partner. This enables Europcar to benefit from a comprehensive three year unlimited mileage warranty covering both the chassis and body.

The Daily 35C13 is powered by a 2.3 litre FPT Industrial diesel engine which is capable of producing up to 126 hp between 3,200 and 3,900 rev/min, and up to 320 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,750 rev/min. The vehicle benefits from Stop & Start functionality, together with a Gear Shift Indicator, enabling the driver to better manage his/her way of driving. Together with the latest lightweight 6-speed transmission, these functions reduce fuel consumption, and consequently CO2 emissions, by up to 10 per cent compared with the models they replace.

Supplied via Iveco dealer Guest Truck & Van, the new vehicles will remain in Europcar’s core fleet for up to three years and will be available for both short and long-term hire.

Iveco reintroduced its Daily DriveAway Options range at the beginning of 2012, following increasing demand from customers for a ready-bodied vehicle range which already conformed with Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

Vanrental.co.uk launches new website design

vanrental.co.uk logoRegular visitors to vanrental.co.uk may have noticed that on Thursday last week we rolled out a brand-new design for the vanrental.co.uk website.

We think it’s cleaner, simpler to use and fresher than the old design, and hope that it will make it easier for visitors to focus on what they want to find — usually van hire price comparison or perhaps European van hire or minibus/MPV hire — while removing some of the clutter and distraction that had built up on the old site design, which had been in use for a number of years.

We’ve tested the new website design fairly thoroughly, and are pretty sure that we’ve ironed out most of the bugs, but if you’ve got any comments or have spotted any problems, then please drop us a line at info@vanrental.co.uk or through our Twitter or Facebook pages.

We’re here to help.

You won’t find one of these vans at your local van hire firm

Eskimo Express dual compartment van by Paneltex Somers

One of Eskimo Express’ new Paneltex Somers dual compartment conversions — the temperature difference between the two compartments can be up to 50C!

For most van users, a standard panel van, perhaps with some racking or tie-down points, is all that’s necessary, making it relatively easy to source replacements from hire companies and van dealers.

However, some van operators have much more demanding requirements. One example is specialist courier Eskimo Express, which runs a fleet of 20 temperature controlled vehicles and does a lot of work for the pharmaceutical industry, transporting materials all over Europe.

The firm’s latest vans are Citroën  Relay models with high-specification dual compartment bodies that enable the Citroëns to operate at -25°C in one compartment and +25°C in the other. This means it’s now possible for Eskimo Express to use one vehicle for jobs that previously required two.

Of course, building a conversion like this isn’t simple: consider the level of insulation needed to effectively separate two compartments that might have a temperature differential of 50°C.

Chertsey-based Eskimo Express sourced the new vans from Norwich-based refrigerated body manufacturer Paneltex Somers. Each van uses Paneltex’s Flexi-Temp bulkhead system to provide effective separation between the two compartments, and Tony Colato from Eskimo Express says that the firm hasn’t found any other converters which can offer such high quality refrigerated conversions:

“Much of our courier work is specifically for the pharmaceutical industry and we have found that, apart from Paneltex Somers, no other vehicle body manufacturer can manufacture such a high level of refrigerated conversion that is ideally suited to this industry. Our vehicles work extremely hard, on deliveries and collections all over Europe, so the reliability and consistent performance achieved by our refrigerated vehicles is vital to the success of the business.”

The new Citroën  Relay vans are both L3H2 (long wheelbase medium-high roof) models and the Paneltex Somers conversions have been completed to ATP Certification Class C, which is recognised as the gold standard for refrigerated conversions in Europe. The Flexi-Temp bulkhead has can be secured in two positions, allowing the relative sizes of each compartment to be changed, to suit the loads being carried.

Each van has Europe-wide satellite tracking and twin temperature recorders, ensuring that the load’s integrity is never questioned and that clients have full visibility of ‘their’ van’s location at all times.

Definitely not your average van.

Practical Car & Van Rental adds telematics to hire fleet

In-Car Cleverness logoPractical Car & Van Rental has partnered with vehicle-to-business technology provider, In-Car Cleverness (ICC) to make ICC’s advanced, feature-rich product available to Practical’s 130 franchisees, who collectively operate around 7,000 cars and vans in the UK.

Developed over 250 million miles of real-world testing and designed to be offered as an entirely scalable telematics solution, the In-Car Cleverness platform allows users to personalise the easy-to-use dashboard interface, tailor the data interrogated and define how it is analysed.

As well as analysing driver behaviour during rentals, customers will benefit from asset protection in terms of tracing fleet vehicles, advanced remote vehicle fault alerts, totally accurate mileage recording and a cutting-edge incident reconstruction system.

Practical Managing Director, Graham Lond, said:

“We feel the adoption of this solution by the network can only add value to our business model, will undoubtedly result in cost savings due to better vehicle management and protection and will give us more ammunition to keep insurance costs at a low level.”

Although this system will partly be used for asset management purposes, it’s interesting to see that Practical also appears to be planning to use the system to monitor drivers’ behaviour. As far as I know, using telematics is unusual in rental cars and vans, as the drivers are usually employed by someone else and are not directly accountable — or managed — by the rental firm.

Tim Eaves, ICC Commercial Director, believes this is a positive for rental firms:

“Whereas fleet operators know their drivers and can offer training and advice if the behaviour of individuals behind the wheel is costing them money, rental companies typically know nothing about the people driving their vehicles.

“That’s where the asset protection benefits of ICC come into their own – being able to see where their vehicles are, how they are being driven and exactly who is liable after an accident will save Practical money in insurance costs alone.”

Although most corporate rental customers will probably welcome this development, I wonder whether it migith be a culture shock for some drivers, who will be accustomed to a certain sense of anonymity and lack of direct responsibility when driving rental vehicles.

Although take-up will be optional, Practical expects the majority of its network to take up the ICC proposition, as it will complement Practical’s fleet insurance option, which is used by 95% of franchisees. Using both services is expected to help cut insurance costs for franchisees.
