Van Driving On Ice: Stay Safe This Winter

Snow covered car

Don’t be one of those idiots who just scrapes a ‘porthole’ clear on the windscreen and drives along peering through it, unable to see anything around them. Clear the windscreen and the side windows completely before driving off.

Based on the view out of my window this morning, cold winter weather finally seems to be arriving in the UK — and with it the icy mornings and evenings that catch out so many drivers each year.

The traction problems caused by snow and ice can be reduced by using winter or all-season tyres, but even if you use these cold weather-rated tyres on your own car, you will find that virtually all hire vans in the UK come with ‘standard’ summer tyres.

These provide very little grip in snow or ice — not ideal if you’re driving an unfamiliar hire van laden with your personal possessions or a valuable delivery of business goods.

Driving tips for icy conditions

With the help of Peter Rodger, who is the Institute of Advanced Motorist’s chief examiner, I’ve put together six key tips for driving safely in icy conditions. By following these tips, you can reduce the chance of being involved in a cold weather-related crash and keep your van, and yourself, safe.

  1. Keep to main roads where possible, as they’re more likely to be salted. Also bear in mind that after the frost has gone, ice can remain in areas which are shaded by trees and buildings – and it forms there first, so be careful in the evening as the temperature drops.
  2. It may seem obvious to say, but every year people forget to make sure that they have de-icer and a scraper in their vehicles. If you’re driving a hire van you’ll need to provide your own, so make sure you have a spare or ‘borrow’ them from your car. Whatever you do, don’t be one of those people who only scrape a small area of glass clear and drive along looking through a slit – clear the whole windscreen to be able to see properly, otherwise you are a danger to yourself and other road users.
  3. If the road is slippery when you start off, do it in second gear, releasing the clutch and accelerating gently, avoiding high revs – this will help prevent wheel spin.  As you drive, stay in higher gears to help avoid wheelspin.
  4. It seems obvious, but cars and vans go in ditches every winter because drivers haven’t taken icy roads seriously enough.  If it’s cold outside, treat wet looking patches with great care – they could be ice, not water.
  5. Stopping distances are increased by up to 10 times in icy conditions, so leave plenty of distance between your van and the vehicle in front – plan so that you’re not relying on your brakes to stop, as they may not have any effect in icy conditions. If it is really slippery, slow down early, and use the gears to do it.
  6. If your van loses grip and starts to slide sideways, take your foot off the accelerator, and point the front wheels where you want to go.

Rodger is keen to emphasise that your attitude and mental preparation are key to staying safe on the roads in winter conditions:

“Being mentally prepared as well as having the right equipment is vital, so think about any problems you encountered last winter, and what you need to do to avoid them or overcome them if they recur this year.”

I agree, and suspect that many drivers get into trouble in winter conditions because they simply don’t know — and haven’t ever been taught (or learned) the correct way to drive in snow and ice.

Rodger’s tips make a great starting point, and I’d strongly recommend you read through them a couple of times to ensure that you know what to do when you are faced with an icy road or snowy conditions on a journey you can’t avoid.

Moving House In January? Don’t Forget Van Hire

Let us show you how to move house with a hire van

Boxes need to be strong to be stacked safely – especially if they’re heavy

Christmas is over and pretty much everyone is now back to work, but the first full week in January is also significant for another reason — people start moving house again, after the Christmas lull.

If you’re moving in the next few weeks, then I’d urge you to book your van hire now (or at least do it as soon as you have a fixed date for completion).

Although availability is now considerably better than it was during the pre-Christmas rush (when courier companies hog a large proportion of hire vans), van rental companies are still busy, and your chosen combination of van size and date could soon become unavailable.

The simplest way to get started is to use our van hire comparison system, which allows you to save money by comparing prices from most of the UK’s major van hire companies on one website.

Our system displays prices for all popular types of van (e.g. Transit-size panel vans, extra-long vans and luton box vans) — so click here to give it a try. You don’t have to provide any personal data to compare prices, and your booking will be made by you, directly with your chosen hire supplier.

Of course, there’s a lot more to moving house than simply hiring a van. Here at vanrental.co.uk, we’ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt, so we’ve produced a simple one-page DIY removals guide to cover all of the main areas.

Finally, we know that driving a van for the first time can be daunting, so we offer a free, printable guide to driving a van for the first time, too.

Good luck if you’re moving in the next few weeks!

The new Europcar Mobility Centre at ExCeL London offers car and van hire, as well as chauffeur, valet and bus transfer services.

“Innovation is central to everything Europcar does, and this is the perfect example of what two leaders in their field can achieve by working in partnership. But this is just the beginning. With over 5 million visitors in 2012, across its 100,000 sqm site, ExCeL is London’s biggest venue and as Europe’s largest rental provider, we believe Europcar is the perfect partner.”

Located on ExCeL’s main boulevard, the Europcar Mobility Centre will serve the needs of exhibition visitors, exhibitors, the campus residents and employees, hotel guests and the immediate wider business and consumer communities.

Moving House In The New Year? Check Out These Tips

Europcar van hire moving houseAre you moving house in the New Year? With Christmas looming, it’s tempting to forget about 2014 until it happens, but as I write, it’s less than three weeks until the 1st January!

Even if you’re using a removals firm, you may be doing your packing yourself, and if you’re planning a DIY move with a hired van, then you need to be doubly thorough and efficient with your packing.

Car and van hire firm Europcar has put together some tips to help you pack and prepare — have a quick read. I recently move house myself, and I can confirm that this advice does make a big difference and is well worth the early effort.

  • Once you know you are going to be moving, have an initial clear out of possessions.
  • Take stock of everything that needs moving and use Europcar’s van calculator online to book the right size van
  • Book your van in advance to be sure you get the right vehicle for your needs
  • Wrap up fragile items carefully
  • Make use of pillows, blankets and duvets to pack around breakables
  • Don’t fill up large boxes, as they’ll be too heavy to move
  • Pack heavy items, like books, in smaller boxes to keep them manageable
  • Colour code the boxes to identify where they need to go in the new house. This reduces stress at the other end
  • Consider having the van delivered to you — you don’t want to have to go and collect it on the day, when you are trying to finish the last bits of packing

For more tips on DIY removals, click here for our free illustrated moving guide. Once you’re ready to book a hire van, then head on over to our van hire comparison engine to find the cheapest, closest van hire branch to your location. We can even do prices for one-way van hire, if you’re moving to a new area.

Finally, don’t forget to have a great Christmas and New Year before the move — I’m sure it will go brilliantly!

Northgate plc Reports 5.8% Fleet Growth Since April

Van hire specialist Northgate plc (LON:NTG) has increased the size of its hire fleet by 2,900 to 52,800 since April — a 5.8% increase. The company reported its half-year results today, and said that the number of vehicles on hire had increased by 2,800 since the end of April, while its pre-tax profits had risen by 12% to £27.4m, continuing a trend I highlighted earlier this year.

Perhaps more impressively, Darlington-based Northgate also reported an increase of 1,200 vehicles on hire in Spain, suggesting that Spain’s economy may be showing signs of life, or perhaps that competition from smaller companies has weakened due to the country’s prolonged recession.

Falling profit margins

However, although Northgate’s growth is encouraging, investors may want to pay attention to its profitability. The firm’s operating margin has fallen from 24.4% to 18.7% over the last year, while its return on capital employed fell to 12.5%, down from 14.8% in April 2013.

Northgate says that the fall in profitability was expected, due to reduced levels of used vehicle sales and investment in new UK sites, from which 1,10 new cars and vans are now on hire, including 900 acquired during the last six months.

However, Northgate’s fleet expansion has come at the cost of a 2% increase in net debt, which rose to £370.4m, although the firm’s growth means that the increased value of its fleet has outpaced the increase in its debt levels, and net gearing fell from 102% at the end of April to 100% at the end of October.

Although Northgate’s growth strategy makes sense, I wonder if it’s proceeding too fast — Northgate says it is planning to open at least 20 new sites over the next three years, but if I was a shareholder I would want to see Northgate’s rather high gearing come down a bit more over the next six months, in case financing costs and interest rates rise over the next few years.

New locations

Northgate has opened two new car and van hire locations over the last six months (Slough and Basildon), with a further site in Charlton due to open shortly and two further sites in the London area due to open before April 2014.
