Duckworths Salvage Citan and 18yo Sprinter

How many manufacturers are happy to boast about their 18-year old vans?

You don’t often see a vehicle manufacturer boasting about the quality of one of their 18-year old vehicles. Yet that’s exactly what Mercedes-Benz did recently, when the firm’s press team decided to feature a company’s 18-year old car transporter alongside two of its new Mercedes vans.

Father and son Mike and Rod Burrows operate Duckworths Salvage & Spares of Truro, in Cornwall. The pair recently treated themselves to two new vans, a Vito Sport Dualiner for son Rod and a long-bodied Citan Sport for his Dad.

One van they haven’t replaced is their 18-year old 3.5t Sprinter-based car transporter:

Duckworths Salvage Citan and 18yo Sprinter

This workhorse is still going strong, says Rod Burrows:

“Our previous Mercedes-Benz Vans have been excellent – the Sprinter transporter was brand new when we bought it 1997 and it still has plenty of life left in it yet.”

The incredible loyalty shown towards Sprinters by a wide range of van operators is something I’ve often commented on before, but this is probably the oldest van I’ve ever seen in a manufacturer’s press release.

RAC Fuel Patrol Renault Master

New Renault Master vans help RAC Fuel Patrols deliver improved services

The RAC has recently placed an order for 26 new Master panel vans which will replace the entire current fleet of RAC Fuel Patrol vehicles. The Master is larger than the outgoing model and offers an increased payload of 1,684kg.

Breakdown operators have started offering dedicated fuel assistance services over the last few years to address the growing problem of misfuelling — most typically and problematically when drivers put petrol into diesel engines.

This means that in addition to a tank for waste fuel and the necessary pumping equipment, the vans can be loaded with a range of tools and replacement batteries to enable them to attend flat battery and wheel change callouts. This will improve the utilisation of the vehicles within the fleet and presumably prevent Fuel Patrol drivers from having any chance to twiddle their thumbs during quiet times for fuelling mishaps.

As part of the conversion into Fuel Patrol vehicles, the load compartment of each Master van has been divided into two. The rear part contains all the fuel draining equipment and the waste fuel tank and is only accessible through the back doors – ensuring there are no issues with fuel fumes and meaning that there is more space in the body of the van for other spare parts and tools:

RAC Fleet Operations Manager Timothy Hartles said:

“With the payload that the Master offers, it really is the right vehicle for the job, while we’ve also noticed that the vans are significantly more economical than our previous fuel patrol vehicles, by as much as around 15 per cent, which will help to lower our running costs.

“Feedback from the patrols has been very good, our drivers are saying that they are well equipped, comfortable and, with the increased space, much easier to work inside than our previous vehicles.”

The RAC has opted for the front-wheel-drive, short-wheelbase, low-roof Master panel van. All 26 vans feature the Business level of trim and are powered by the 2.3-litre dCi 125 turbo diesel engine.

Each Master Fuel Patrol vehicle will cover on average 25,000 miles a year. The choice of Business trim level means that vans are well specified, with standard features including DAB radio, Bluetooth, ESC with Hill Start Assist and Grip Xtend, electric front windows and electric door mirrors.

SMMT van registrations Dec 2009 to Nov 2015

Van registrations back on track in November with 9.6% rise

After surprisingly slow growth in October, new van registrations rose by 9.6% to 29,051 in November, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The increase takes this year’s total to 341,420 new vans, 15.7% more than during the first eleven months of 2014.

November % change Year-to-date % change Rolling year % change
Vans 29,051 9.6% 341,420 15.7% 367,949 16.4%
Trucks 4,252 55.8% 47,184 22.3% 50,082 0.3%
Total 33,303 13.9% 388,604 16.4% 418,031 14.2%

Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said:

“The commercial vehicle market continues to demonstrate phenomenal progress, with sustained growth over a number of years as ever-more confident businesses invest in their fleets.

Here’s how the progress of the last six years looks on a graph (the dark blue line represents vans):

SMMT van registrations Dec 2009 to Nov 2015

As usual, the biggest growth was in the 2.5-3.5t category, where sales rose by 19.1% to 19,150 units — 66% of all vans registered in November.

All of these new van sales are good news for van dealers and also, by implication, for the UK economy. Now let’s see what next year brings.

One millionth Vauxhall Vivaro at Luton

One million Vauxhall Vivaro buyers can’t be wrong

I’ve commented before that Vauxhall’s Luton plant is the most important contributor to the UK’s commercial vehicle manufacturing industry.

If you weren’t convinced before, then news that the Luton factory has just produced its one millionth Vivaro van may convince you.

One millionth Vauxhall Vivaro at Luton

The milestone comes 17 months after the firm reported the completion of its 900,000th Vivaro. Despite the disruption caused by the changeover to the new Vivaro model, Vauxhall has produced another 100,000 Vivaros since then, including 24,500 so far in 2015.

Fittingly, Vauxhall’s one millionth Vivaro went to one of the firm’s biggest customers and one the UK’s biggest fleet operators, BT Fleet.

BT Fleet has purchased 13,368 Vivaro vans over the last eleven years, and Mike Langford, Senior Customer Relationship Manager at BT Fleet, says that the current model is the best yet:

“We have purchased 13,368 Vivaros from Vauxhall over the past 11 years and they have served us well. The van has evolved over time to meet the changing needs of our workforce, and I believe the vans we are taking delivery of at the moment are their best yet.

BT Fleet currently operates 30,000 vehicles and so has considerable expertise and influence in the UK commercial vehicle market, so its support for the Vivaro is a good sign for the future of the Luton plant, which employs 1,500 people.

Vauxhall didn’t waste the opportunity to have a dig at rival Ford, pointing out that the Luton plant beat competition from across Europe to produce the new Vivaro. Luton is also expected to provide around £600m of business for smaller UK firms across the life of the Vivaro, as 40 per cent of the parts for the new Vivaro are sourced in the UK, up from 24 per cent for the previous model.

Ford shut its Transit factory in Southampton in 2013, moving production to Turkey. Vauxhall’s success begs the question — which I’ve asked before — as to why Ford couldn’t make a success of the plant.

Posten Renault Kangoo Z.E.

Norwegian posties make the switch to electric vans with Renault

Cold weather performance is often cited as a concern by people considering electric vehicles, but it doesn’t seem to be a big problem for Posten, which is Norway’s postal service.

Posten already has a fleet of 900 electric vehicles and has just ordered a further 240 Renault Kangoo Maxi Z.E. electric vans, which will be used to deliver the post in urban areas.

Posten Renault Kangoo Z.E.

Posten provided an interesting statistic I’ve never seen before, revealing that it is currently responsible for 1% of Norway’s total CO2 emissions. I’d like to see how that compares to Royal Mail’s footprint within the UK’s total emissions. Posten is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2020, hence the drive to use more electric vehicles.

Renault estimates that the Kangoo Maxi Z.E. has a real-world range of between 52 and 84 miles, depending on ambient temperatures and driving conditions. This is enough for many urban delivery routes, as it would be in the UK.

Electric vehicles provide other benefits for Posten, too. In Norway, electric cars are exempt from VAT and road tax. They pay no parking fees, road tolls or ferry charges, and they are entitled to use bus lanes. All these costs add up and being able to drive in bus lanes is certainly a time saver.

Posten’s decision to go electric is not unusual in Norway. The government provides a range of incentives for electric vehicle owners and electric vehicles currently account for 20% of all new vehicle sales in Norway. By 2020, 10% (200,000) of all vehicles are expected to be electric.

Alongside this, UK electric vehicle sales look pretty feeble. During the first ten months of this year, Renault sold 1,475 electric vehicles in the UK. We’ve still got a way to go to match the Norwegians.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter fire engine

Could new Sprinter fire engine extinguish costs without sacrificing safety?

Public sector budgets are being cut all round. It’s also interesting to learn that the number of call outs the UK’s fire services receive to serious fires is falling.

As a result, John McGauley, who is managing director of specialist vehicle converter PIckup Systems, believe that the traditional HGV-based fire appliance is sometimes overkill for the uses to which it it put. Mr McGauley reckons many fire services could manage quite well and save cash by switching to smaller models.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter fire engine

The Burnley, Lancashire-based firm has just launched a new fire-fighting concept vehicle, based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

The prototype ‘Compac’ vehicle was built on a 5.0-tonne Sprinter 519 CDI chassis cab with a crew cab, which was supplied by Dealer Ciceley Commercials.

Pickup Systems' Mercedes-Benz Sprinter fire engine conversion

The Sprinter Compac is powered by a 190 hp Euro VI engine, which drives through an automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and has a factory-built steel crew cab with seating for up to five firefighters.

Its body is constructed from high-strength polypropylene and includes lockers and slide-and-tilt drawers to carry tools and equipment safely and securely, as well as an 800-litre water tank and Godiva KP2 PTO-powered pump. A nine-metre ladder is stowed on the roof.

“The vehicle is just like a standard fire tender, but downsized,” continued Mr McGauley. “It can easily cope with the majority of fire situations and is also well suited for responding to road traffic collisions and water rescues. It really comes into its own, though, when attending incidents in areas where access is restricted, such as tight inner-city streets or narrow country lanes.

“At the same time its lower initial purchase price, and greatly improved maintenance costs and fuel economy, mean it can be as much as 60% cheaper to operate than a traditional truck-based fire engine.”

I don’t know enough about fire work to know whether using one or more of these van conversions in place of a traditional fire engine would compromise safety. I suspect there may be several conflicting views on this. However, it seems that fire services across the UK are interest in finding out more.

Pickup Systems has already presented the Sprinter Compac at the Emergency Services Show, at the NEC in Birmingham, and is now touring the country carrying out demonstrations.

“Our vehicle has generated a real buzz of interest and is in great demand from fire and rescue services all over Britain who want to take a closer look at it,” said Mr McGauley.

Merseytravel Nissan e-NV200 Combi

Merseytravel goes underground with electric power

It’s hard to imagine a more suitable place to use an emission-free electric van than in a busy tunnel.

So it makes perfect sense that Merseytravel, which operates the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels under the river Mersey, has started to make the switch to electric power.

Merseytravel Nissan e-NV200 Combi

One of Merseytravel’s e-NV200’s in action in Liverpool’s Kingsway Tunnel

In addition to the two tunnels, which handle 90,000 vehicles a day, Merseytravel operates seven tunnel ventilation stations, three ferry terminals and various bus stations. The firm bought its first electric vehicle, a Nissan LEAF, last year and has recently added three Nissan e-NV200 Combis to its 40-strong maintenance fleet.

The electric Combi vans will be used to transport work crews and their tools around the Merseytravel estate. The company is also backing the wider adoption of electric power in Liverpool by operating the government-funded Recharge initiative. This aims to provide a network of charging points at key locations throughout Liverpool City and West Cheshire.

So far, 30 chargers have been installed at locations including Seacombe  Ferry Terminal, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Broad Green Hospital, and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
