Hertz Opens Newcastle Van Rental Supersite

Hertz Newcastle Van SupersiteHertz UK has opened a new van rental ‘supersite’ to serve the Tyne and Wear area of the north-east of England. The branch, which is located on Industrial Road, Washington, is less than 10 miles from Sunderland and Newcastle and is expected to serve the region’s large business market.

Hertz’s van supersites are aimed at the large fleet rental market, which is experiencing an ongoing shift away from finance and lease ownership models to long-term rental (a subject I touched on recently).

The new site will offer bespoke and standard van rental requirements. Customers will have access to commercial vehicle expertise, service and maintenance support, and efficient repairs of both warranty and non-warranty vehicles.

In addition, Hertz Van Supersites provide innovative fleet management services that enable fleet managers to streamline vehicle usage, cut down pool fleet numbers, and effectively reduce administration costs.

Michel Taride, Group President of Hertz International, said:

“Van rental offers a compelling alternative to vehicle ownership. It reduces the financial commitment of purchasing, breakdown cover, insurance, and getting a fleet taxed and ready for the road. The trend for van fleet rentals instead of purchases is increasing, which has created a requirement for our van rental business to expand even further.”

“Hertz works with thousands of large and small van operators, from self-employed van drivers to large operators with 500+ van fleets,” added Neil Cunningham, General Manager, Hertz UK. “We are excited to be investing and expanding in the local area and also increasing the number of people we employee locally.”

The opening of the Newcastle Van Supersite is part of Hertz’s long term plan to supersize its Van Supersite network in the UK, which now features 21 locations strategically placed throughout the country. The Supersites have the capacity to rent over 1,000 vehicles (out of Hertz UK’s 5000-strong van fleet) and have been specifically built to meet the demands of fleet managers who operate large commercial fleets. Located to enable quick and easy access to motorways, the network enables a rapid response to the needs of fleet managers across a large operating area.

Hertz Van Supersites can also provide body conversions, welfare vehicles or specialist vehicle wrapping. Customers can also benefit from a comprehensive list of services that covers everything from exterior wrap/livery, interior racking and shelving and tow bars, to beacons, cages, speed limiters, flood lights, hand wash units and reversing cameras/sensors.

Hertz Launches Basingstoke Van Supersite

Hertz logoHertz has opened a new van supersite in Basingstoke, bring the total number of supersites around the UK to 20. The van supersites are designed to serve the needs of fleet market — a growing proportion of which is choosing long-term van rental rather than ownership or traditional leasing.

A full range of vans including Luton box vehicles, tippers, crew cabs and customised vehicles will be available at the Basingstoke supersite. Neil Cunningham, General Manager for the UK, unveiled the official, new Van Supersite at Exhibition Court, Armstrong Road in an opening ceremony today.

As with all Hertz Van Supersites, the Basingstoke Supersite will support both bespoke and standard van rental requirements.

Van rental offers an unbeatable alternative to investing in vehicle ownership.  It reduces the financial commitment companies have to put into everything from breakdown cover and insurance to getting a fleet of vehicles taxed and ready for the road,” said Michel Taride, President of Hertz International.

“The trend for van fleet rentals instead of purchases is increasing, and this shift in behaviour has created a requirement for our van business to expand. We are excited to be investing and expanding in the local area and also increasing the number of people we employee in Basingstoke,” he added.

The opening of the Basingstoke Van Supersite is part of Hertz’s 2012 plan to supersize its Van Supersite network in the UK, which now features 20 locations strategically placed throughout the country.  The Supersites have been specifically built to meet the demands of fleet managers who operate large commercial fleets. Located to enable quick and easy access to motorways, the network enables a rapid response to the needs of fleet managers across a large operating area.

In order to customize vehicles for specific business purposes, Hertz Van Supersites provide body conversions, welfare vehicles or specialist vehicle wrapping. Customers can also benefit from a comprehensive list of services that covers everything from exterior wrap/livery, interior racking and shelving and tow bars, to beacons, cages, speed limiters, flood lights, hand wash units (hot and cold) and reversing cameras/sensors.

Across the UK, Hertz operates a 5,000 strong van fleet with vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes. Vans available at the Basingstoke location include:

Hertz Joins Van Excellence Scheme

Hertz UK is to become the first van hire company in the UK to promote the Freight Transport Association‘s award-winning Van Excellence Code (VEC).

Some of the UK’s largest van operators, including Sainsbury’s, DHL, City Link and Carillion, have already signed up to the scheme and Hertz’s participation will focus on its Owner Driver Van Hire Scheme customers. This scheme serves the needs of large numbers of self-employed van drivers who provide distribution services on a sub-contract basis for the express parcels industry. The SME sector accounts for most of the three million vans on the road in the UK and is where Hertz can play a key role in helping to promote the new VEC standard.

The VEC is aimed at establishing a comprehensive and realistic code of conduct for van operators which will benefit businesses, the environment and all road users. It sets standards in three primary areas: vehicle maintenance, driver competence and behaviour, and environmental impact. Following its tradition for leading innovation and excellence, Hertz will be the first vehicle rental company to endorse the VEC and promote the benefits of Van Excellence accreditation amongst its van hire customers.

Mark Cartwright, Head of Vans and LCV’s at FTA, commented:

“It is a pleasure to welcome Hertz into our association. The success of any initiative on such a large scale requires the support of all the biggest players in the industry. With a reputation for exceptional services and a large customer base, we have no doubt that our relationship with Hertz will be a great asset in our efforts to set the standard for future working practices in the van sector.”

Michel Taride, President of Hertz International, said:

“As one of the world’s leading provider of transport solutions, we are committed to the development of all sectors of the transport industry and have always implemented rigorous standards in all our operations.  As vans are one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK and also critical to the small and medium business economies, it is extremely crucial to have high standards such as the voluntary Van Excellence Code. Combining our strengths with the expertise, knowledge and services of the FTA, we are confident of the success of Van Excellence and are proud to support the FTA in this initiative.”

Christmas Van Hire For Students – Or Store It Instead

If you are travelling home this Christmas and need to empty your belongings out of your room in halls, then why not hire  a van for a one-way trip and save your parent’s the hassle of a return trip in a heavily-loaded car?

One-way van hire is surprisingly easy to arrange and Hertz is currently offering great deals on student car and van hire for students aged 19-24.

As far as we know, this is unique amongst van hire companies, most of whom require you to be at least 21 years old.

Hertz has more than 70 locations around the UK, so there is probably one quite close to your university and to your home – perfect for arranging a one-way van hire.

To cut costs still further, why not pool your resources with another student who’s travelling to the same area and halve the cost? Most vans are big enough for two students’ possessions and you may be glad of the company if it’s a long drive.

If you haven’t driven a van before, don’t worry too much – vans are pretty easy to drive. Check out our page on driving a van for the first time for a few tips to remember.

Don’t Take It Home – Store It Instead

Finally, if transporting all of your stuff home for three weeks and then bringing it straight back again seems a bit daft (well, it might do), then consider self storage instead.

Self storage is readily available all over the UK and we’ve put together a self-storage guide to help you get started. The basic principle is simple – you pay by the week or month to have your own private lock-up in secure building or compound. You can choose how much storage you need – from a large cupboard right up to a warehouse!
