Van size guide: Should I hire a large van?

New Europcar Volkswagen Crafter

Choosing the right-sized van is often the hardest part of renting a van! Understanding the different sizes and knowing how much space you need for your stuff isn’t always as simple as it might seem.

That’s why we’re running a series of posts aimed at helping you understand the most popular van sizes offered by the van hire companies in our price comparison system. (You can also find a summary of this information with typical load bay dimensions on our van sizes page.)

So far, we’ve covered:

Today we’re looking at large vans.

Should I go large?

When a rental company offers you a large van, it usually means a long wheelbase panel van. Occasionally it might be a medium wheelbase model.

Popular models include the Ford Transit LWB, Volkswagen Crafter (pictured above), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Renault Master and Fiat Ducato.

Although these vans are quite bulky, they’re still quite easy to drive, with big clear mirrors and dash-mounted gearsticks and power steering which make them easy to handle. Typical fuel consumption is likely to be 30-35mpg. And these vans usually have a high roof, so you won’t be able to go into car parks with height barriers, for example.

What will fit in a large van? Most things, as long as you’re realistic. You should be able to fit the contents of a studio flat, including some furniture and a reasonable number of boxes. Possibly even a one-bed flat if you don’t have too much furniture or kitchen appliances.

For example, you should be able to stack a couple of sofas, slide in a mattress, and fit plenty of boxes in around these big items. Depending on the size of your sofa, you might get a fridge or a washing machine in too.

Although you can get a lot in, it’s worth remembering that you probably won’t be able to use the full height and space of the van. If you stack stuff too high, you may end up with damage.

The load area on a long wheelbase van is typically 3.5-4m long, although this can vary. The roof is often high enough to provide standing height and load width will be around 1.7m (less between the wheel arches).

What won’t fit? Very long and large pieces of furniture may still be difficult to fit, or if they do fit, you may find that you have to put them down the middle of the van because of the wheel arches. This may mean that you can’t use the rest of the space inside the van very efficiently.

Other things that might not fit inside a long wheelbase van are 4.8m lengths of timber from builders merchants and 5m rolls of carpet.

Next up: We’ll take a look at extra-long wheelbase vans!

Birmingham NEC exhibition hall

Birmingham NEC van hire is now available on vanrental.co.uk

Birmingham NEC exhibition hall

Inside an exhibition hall at the Birmingham NEC @ CV Show 2017

Here at vanrental.co.uk we’re always trying to improve our coverage of van hire suppliers across the UK (and Ireland!).

One of the newest locations on our price comparison engine is West Midlands exhibition venue, the Birmingham NEC. At the time of writing (Jan 2018) both Budget and Avis operate van hire branches on the NEC estate.

The NEC is easily accessible by rail and air, as well as by road. This means that NEC visitors who find expect to take large items home from an exhibition could choose to arrive by rail (Birmingham International) or air (nearby Birmingham Airport) and then hire a van with a one-way booking to return to home.

Alternatively if you need to make a delivery to the NEC, you could choose this option too and then drop off your van and get a train or plane home.

One-way van hire is usually available from Budget, so this could be an ideal option in some scenarios.

We’re keen to add more van hire suppliers in the NEC area. If you run a rental company in the area and would like to add your firm to our van and minibus hire search system, then please check out our options for getting listed or get in touch with us directly.

Ford F150 right-hand drive

Ford F-150 Raptor now available in UK-spec right-hand drive

Ford F150 right-hand drive

Specialist car dealer Clive Sutton is now selling the UK’s first Ford F150 Ford F150 right-hand drive conversion.

Until now, owning a genuine American pickup with right-hand drive has been pretty much impossible. But specialist luxury car dealer Clive Sutton has changed that, with the UK’s first right-hand drive conversion of a Ford F-150 Raptor pickup.

The fully-converted model is now available for the not-so-bargain price of £89,000 +VAT. Converting an existing F-150 Raptor, should you happen to own one, will cost around £32,000 +VAT.

What’s a Raptor?

In case you’re not familiar, the Raptor version of the F-150 is a high-spec version of the standard F-150, with extra off-road equipment including super knarly off-road tyres and upgraded long-travel suspension. Power is delivered by a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine which delivers 450 horsepower through a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

The conversion has been done in depth and includes a right-hand drive steering rack, precision-sculpted cabin fittings and a fully ‘mirrored’ cabin and dashboard conversion.

Even the Ford Sync 3 infotainment system has been reprogrammed with full European mapping and radio frequencies.

Ford F-150 Raptor RHD cab

Inside the cab of Clive Sutton’s first RHD Ford F-150 conversion

Sutton’s first converted model is a SuperCab model in Lightening Blue. Ford’s SuperCab is a smaller version of the SuperCrew crew cab, so while it can seat extra passengers, they won’t have as much space as in a full-size crew cab.

That’s probably just as well, because according to this US review, the full-sized SuperCrew cab adds an extra 12 inches to the truck’s already gigantic dimensions (compared to a standard UK-spec pickup)

I want more…

If a ‘standard’ F-150 just isn’t enough, then Clive Sutton has something even more special on offer. Renowned US tuner Shelby is producing a limited run of 500 Shelby-tuned Ford F-150 pickups.

In among these will be 150 F-150 Super Snake models. These heavily modified trucks are built around a 750hp supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine and will have more than 45 proprietary components. The price will be £120,000, including VAT.

Shelby F-150 Super Snake

Just two of these 750hp V8 Shelby F-150 Super Snake trucks will be imported to the UK. Contact dealer Clive Sutton if you’re interested.

The Super Snake promises to be a true super truck. But just two of these models will be available in the UK, so anyone who is interested should contact Sutton as soon as possible.

Moving house with a van

What van adventures are you planning this half term?

Moving house with a van

Moving house with a hire van

It’s already the start of February, and the half-term holiday is approaching fast. UK school half term is either 12-16 or 19-23 February 2018, depending on where your children are at school.

This early in the year isn’t always a great time to go away, but it is a fantastic time to get to grips with jobs at home so that they’re finished before the good weather arrives in time for Easter. Volkswagen Transporter HighlineHere are a few suggestions:

  • DIY projects
  • Having a clear out
  • Trips to Ikea
  • Getting to grips with messy gardens before everything starts growing

Many of these jobs need a load-lugging vehicle that you can safely get dirty.

Rather than using the family car, it makes a lot more sense to hire a van for a day or two. You might be surprised how much fun they are to drive — why not treat yourself to your own van adventure!

Hiring a van can also be surprisingly affordable.

Indeed, when you compare the cost and time required to make multiple trips in your car to get supplies or head to the tip, hiring a van might actually be cheaper.

Plus there’s the bonus of just being able to sweep out the back when you’re done, rather than having to clean and hoover dirty car seats and repair scratched plastic trim.

If you’re not sure what size of van you’ll need, then check out our van size guide. But to get you started, here’s a quick summary:

  • Medium van – ideal for smaller items of furniture, trips to the tip or smaller DIY supplies such as tiles and bags of cement. If you’re tiling a bathroom, for example, the weight of the tiles means you’d probably have to make several trips in a car, but could probably do it in one go in a van.
  • Large van – sofas, dining tables and beds should all fit easily.
  • Luton van — the best choice if you have a lot of furniture or other bulky items to shift.
  • Dropside/tipper — if you’re planning a big building or garden project, this could be the best choice. The open load bed is ideal for dirty work and means that dumpy bags of soil or sand can be lifted on. Also useful for long lengths of timber.

Whatever you’re planning, a van is bound to make shifting stuff easier. Click here to compare van hire prices in your area.

Finally, if you’re to take some time off and enjoy a big trip out with lots of family or friends, have you considered hiring a minibus or a 7/9 seater MPV? Taking one vehicle instead of two or three Renault Trafic SpaceClasshas several bid advantages:

  • Everyone can travel together
  • You only need one parking space
  • You only need one designated driver

We offer MPV and minibus hire from a range of well-known hire companies. To compare prices in your area, click here.

I’m pleased to say that we’ve recently added in new van hire suppliers providing coverage in Hampton, London.

This West London suburb forms part of the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, but it’s best known as the location of Hampton Court Palace and its legendary maze. Hampton itself is midway between Sunbury and Kingston, on the A308. It’s around 15 miles from central London by road or rail, making it a popular area with commuters.

At the time of writing (Jan 2018), we have one van hire supplier listed in Hampton, Budget. This popular firm has a network of van hire branches across the UK (here’s a list) and normally offers a good selection of popular van sizes at its branches. These typically include small and medium vans.

We’re keen to add more van hire suppliers in Hampton and the surrounding area. If you run a rental company in the area and would like to add your firm to our van and minibus hire search system, then please check out our options for getting listed or get in touch with us directly.

Ford Transit Custom

Van size guide: Should I hire a medium van?

Ford Transit Custom

The Ford Transit Custom is the UK’s most popular medium van.

When you hire a van, choosing the right size isn’t always easy. Especially if it’s your first time.

To help you find the right size van for you, we’ve put together a run-down of the most popular van sizes offered by the van hire companies in our price comparison system. (You can also find a summary of this information with typical load bay dimensions on our van sizes page.)

We’ve already covered small vans.

This week we’re continuing with a look at medium vans.

Medium is a popular choice

The best-known medium van in the UK is probably the top-selling Ford Transit Custom. Other popular choices from other manufacturers include the Luton-built Vauxhall Vivaro and the Volkswagen Transporter.

There’s a good reason why this size of van is so popular. It’s big enough to hold quite a lot, but small enough to be car-like to drive and easy to park. Fuel consumption is also good, with modern models often able to give more than 40mpg.

What will fit in a medium van? A typical medium van might be able to carry a cooker, washing machine, fridge and freezer, plus some small stuff. Or you could probably fit in two armchairs or one sofar (although some sofas will be too long).

The load area is usually 2.4m long, so you can fit 8’x4′ plasterboard, mattresses, and other longer items. Sideboards should fit too, as might a medium-sized dining table and chairs.

If you’re packing removal boxes, then I’d expect to get 25-40 in, depending on their size, weight and how easily they can be stacked.

These probably won’t fit: Very large items of furniture could still be awkward. A triple wardrobe or a large Welsh dresser might notfit. Nor will large rolls of carpet, or very large tables. Big sofas will be a problem, and you’ll only fit one sofa in unless it’s unusually small.

Another problem is that even if you can cram everything in, you may find it difficult to secure it and make sure that nothing gets damaged while you’re driving. Sometimes a bigger van allows you to pack things more safely.

Next up: We’ll take a look at long wheelbase vans!

I’m pleased to report that vanrental.co.uk now offers van hire coverage in Chipping Sodbury.

This South Gloucestershire town can trace its history back to the 12th century, making it one of the older settlements in the area. But despite an appealing rural location and village feel, ti’s actually fairly close to Bristol, and neighbouring Yate offers a direct rail service to the south-western city.

At the time of writing (Jan 2018) we have just one van hire supplier in Chipping Sodbury, Enterprise. This well-known global firm has a comprehensive branch network around the UK (here’s a list) and normally provides a good choice of nearly-new vans in popular sizes, including medium, long and extra-long panel vans.

We’re keen to add more van hire suppliers in Chipping Sodbury (or Yate) to improve our comparison results. If you run a rental company in the area and would like to add your firm to our van and minibus hire search system, then please check out our options for getting listed or get in touch with us directly.

Volkswagen Caddy van

Van size guide: Should I hire a small van?

Volkswagen Caddy van

The Volkswagen Caddy is a popular small van. Other choices include Ford Transit Connect and the Citroen Berlingo.

Choosing the right size van is probably the hardest part of hiring a van. If you choose the wrong size, you can end up in a difficult situation.

To help you find the right size van for you, we’ve put together a run-down of the most popular van sizes offered by the van hire companies in our price comparison system. (You can also find a summary of this information with typical load bay dimensions on our van sizes page.)

Small can be beautiful

Today we’re starting with a look at small vans. These popular workhorses are bigger than their name suggests.

But their car-like size means they’re also easy to drive, easy on fuel and easy to fit into car park spaces.

However, these vans generally only have room for two people (driver + passenger) and they’re not big enough for everything! Here’s what will fit and what probably won’t.

Small vans are ideal for: This size of van is great for for boxes and parcels, or perhaps a fridge or washing machine. They’re also good for most garden waste or trips to the tip.

Small vans are also popular with tradesmen who don’t need too much space for tools and equipment.

The main thing to watch out for is that you’ll need to carry something that’s too long or high to fit in the back.

The load-through hatch in the Transit Connect

Some small vans now have hatches allowing you to load longer items through from the back into the front. But I wouldn’t rely on this when hiring a van, as not all models have this feature.

These probably won’t fitThe loadspace in small vans is typically around 1.7m long and perhaps 1.5m wide (less between the wheel arches). Height is restricted to around 1.2m.

So small vans aren’t ideal for things like long lengths of timber, plasterboard, mattresses, wardrobes, sideboards, bed frames or sofas. For this kind of item I’d suggest a larger van.

Next up: We’ll take a look at medium vans, a.k.a. Transit vans!

The Wirral town of Heswall is the latest location to be added to our growing database of UK van and minibus hire locations . We now have more than 560 locations, many with multiple hire companies that you can compare through our independent price comparison system.

Heswall is a smallish town but it’s only around 20 minutes’ drive to Chester and Liverpool. It’s a popular place to live on Merseyside, with a population of more than 12,000, including nearby Gayton and Barnston.

At the time of writing (Jan 2018) we only have one van hire supplier in Heswall, which is Enterprise. This well-known hire group always offers a decent range of modern vans. Sizes range from small to extra long — and Enterprise also offers luton vans for DIY house removals or heavy objects requiring a tail lift.

We’re keen to add more van hire suppliers in Heswall, so if you run a rental company in the area and would like to add your firm to our van hire search system, then please check out our options for getting listed or get in touch with us directly.

Weightlifting van driver

Van drivers ditch pasties for salads and gym sessions

Weightlifting van driver

White van man has long had the stereotyped reputation of being a gym-dodging pasty lover. But that’s all changing according to a new survey.

Research shows that the average van driver will work out once a week, with more than 10% heading to the gym a staggering five times a week. And when your body’s a temple, then you don’t fill it with junk.

One in seven of those questioned leaves home with a packed lunch each day, while one in 10 claims to eat “a very healthy diet of fruit, vegetables and salad” when they’re on the road. Four in 10 drivers have now swapped sugary and salty snacks for healthy nibbles as well.

A spokesman for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which commissioned the research, said:

“This research seems to show that nowadays, van drivers are leading a much healthier lifestyle than you might expect. Rather than grabbing whatever they can while out on the road, they are tucking into homemade lunches of salad and fruit – a far cry from the food you might expect them to be eating.”

It seems van drivers are sick of being stereotyped as overweight and impatient drivers. Six in 10 say they are “courteous drivers” while half claim to be “polite and understanding”.

Indeed, the whole idea of white van man is beginning to look outdated — of the 500 drivers questioned for this research, 43% were women!
