Europcar adds 170 new Volkswagen Crafter vans to UK rental fleet

New Europcar Volkswagen Crafter

Europcar has added 170 new model Volkswagen Crafter vans to its UK rental fleet. The new vehicles will be available at Europcar locations from this month.

The firm has used Volkswagen vans before but the new Crafter is an important model for the German manufacturers, as it’s an all-new in-house design, rather than a re-badged Mercedes-Benz Sprinter like previous models.

The new model features a raft of safety features including City Emergency Braking and Front Assist, both designed to minimise or avoid frontal collisions in traffic. Parking sensors are also a useful addition for drivers who may not be used to driving a van.

Commenting on the new vans, Stuart Russell, Specialist Vehicles Director at Europcar UK Group, said:

“The Volkswagen Crafter is a welcome addition to the Europcar commercial fleet. The new model is one of the most practical, economical and safest vans currently on the market and was designed from the ground up to appeal to businesses across various industries.”

Europcar’s new Crafters are powered by the 140 PS version of Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, which the firm says has been specially designed for commercial vehicles, not simply transposed from its car range.

All-new Volkswagen Crafter now on sale in UK

The all-new Volkswagen Crafter is now available to order from UK Volkswagen Van Centre dealers, with prices start from £23,920 +VAT. The model will receive its UK launch at the CV Show in April. First deliveries are expected in May.

Volkswagen Crafter

The new Volkswagen Crafter is now available to order in the UK. First deliveries are expected in May 2017.

Unlike previous models, the new Crafter is not based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. It’s an all-Volkswagen effort on a new platform and will also be sold under the group’s truck-focused MAN brand.

All variants will be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI (Euro 6) diesel engine which Volkswagen says has been developed specifically for commercial vehicles. The point here is that previous versions of the Crafter were powered by VW engines lifted from the group’s large cars and smaller vans. They sometimes lacked pulling power when heavily loaded — something Volkswagen says won’t be a problem with the new model.

Up to four choices of power output will be available — 102, 122, 140 and 177 PS — depending on the variant selected. Buyers will be able to choose between front, rear and all-wheel drive models featured VW’s 4MOTION system.  Manual and automatic gearbox options will also be available.

Up to three different vehicle lengths are available, depending on the model chosen: 5.9 m, 6.84 m or 7.39 m. Panel van variants also come with one of three different roof heights: 2.35 m, 2.59 m or 2.79 m.

In line with the Caddy and Transporter ranges, three trim levels will be on offer — Startline, Trendline and Highline. Prices will start from £23,920 exc. VAT for the basic Crafter Startline.

Here’s a summary of the specification features for each time level:

Panel van Startline from £23,920 (basic ex VAT)

  • Automatic Post Collision Braking
  • Cross-wind assist
  • Driver alert system
  • 180-degree opening rear wing doors
  • Composition audio radio
  • Bluetooth

Panel van Trendline from £25,270 (basic ex VAT) in addition to Startline

  • Front assist including emergency braking system
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • Electrically heated and adjustable wing mirrors
  • 270-degree opening rear wing doors
  • Composition Media Radio with DAB+
  • Multi-function steering wheel
  • Comfort driver’s seat
  • Wooden floor in load area
  • Grab handles on rear entry pillars

Panel van Highline from £29,220 (basic ex vat) in addition to Trendline

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Passenger airbag
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Heated windscreen
  • Front fog lights with cornering function
  • Comfort-plus driver’s seat

The vans will be used by the Out There staff to cover various grounds maintenance and landscape contracts all across Northern Ireland and soon in London, where they have secured their first mainland UK contract.

The purpose built vehicles have been modified to ensure that each is able to carry the firm’s plant equipment.  All panel vans have been fully ply-lined, feature bulkhead protection and are fitted with a heavy duty towbar. In addition, a number of the vehicles have been converted to accommodate further crew members with a second row of seats installed and glazed side windows fitted.

Steven Thompson, Managing Director at Out There said:

“This is an exciting time for everyone at Out There and it’s great to finally unveil the new brand and fleet to everyone. We have around 70 new vehicles that are going to be renewed over the next 18 months, and we are pleased to have partnered up with Donnelly Commercial Vehicles for this first phase.

Out There’s fleet also includes a number of Volkswagen Caddy vans, as well as flatbed and tipper variants of the Crafter.

Volkswagen e-Crafter electric van

Volkswagen unveils e-Crafter electric van concept

Volkswagen has unveiled an all-electric version of its new Crafter van at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover.

Although it’s still a concept at this stage, the firm says that an electric Crafter was always part of the plan for the new range and that the first e-Crafter vans “will be in customer hands by 2017”.

Volkswagen e-Crafter electric van

The Volkswagen e-Crafter electric van concept is expected to go into production in 2017.

VW says that the e-Crafter will have the same loadspace as conventionally-powered models, with a payload of up to 1.7 tonnes. Maximum speed will be limited to 80km/h (50mph), enabling the e-Crafter to deliver a range of more than 200km (125 miles).

However, VW says that future options may include more powerful battery packs providing a range of up to 400km (250 miles).

The concept vehicle’s battery pack, which is made up of 312 cells and has a total capacity of 43 kilowatt hours, is accommodated in under the cargo space floor, so it doesn’t alter the internal space that’s avaialble. Drivers with access to a fast charger will be able to charge the 43kWh battery to 80% capacity in just 45 minutes.

More details to follow when the e-Crafter goes into production.

All-new Volkswagen Crafter

All-new Volkswagen Crafter unveiled at global launch

No fewer than 69 versions of the new Volkswagen Crafter will be available to order by mid-2017.

The all-new model marks a bold change for Volkswagen, as previous versions of the Crafter have simply been Mercedes-Benz Sprinters fitted with VW engines.

All-new Volkswagen Crafter

Here’s an overview of the choices that will be available once the model roll-out is completed next year:

  • 4 base models, 3 lengths, 3 heights
  • Front, rear or 4MOTION all-wheel drive
  • Manual or automatic gearbox
  • Payload of up to 5.5 tonnes (i.e. 7.5 tonne gross weight?)
  • Maximum cargo volume of 18.4 cubic metres
  • Panel van, single and double cab chassis cab models plus conversion options such as tippers
  • The new Crafter will be available ex-factory with additional equipment such as ex factory as a second compressor for refrigeration or fresh produce applications, four variants of a second battery, a second air conditioner and a second heat exchanger for a fuel-operated auxiliary heating system.

Essentially the Crafter offers everything that the Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily and Ford Transit offer — the three other heavy vans in the market from which VW will hope to take market share.

Inside the new Volkswagen Crafter

One criticism of past Crafters is that they lacked pulling power when fully loaded, due to using car-derived 2.0 TDI engines. Volkswagen says that the Euro 6 EA 288 Commercial 2.0-litre TDI engine used in the new van is has been developed to meet the needs of commercial use and should offer an improved performance.

Pre-sales of the new Crafter begin in November 2016. UK launch is expected in Spring 2017. The first models to hit the roads seem likely to be front-wheel drive models, which will offer gross weights of 3.0-4.0t and engine power ratings from 102 PS to 177 PS.

From around mid-2017, the powertrains on offer will be supplemented by the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with a transversely mounted engine and the rear-wheel drive system with a longitudinally mounted engine.

Will the new Volkswagen Crafter be a Sprinter beater?

Volkswagen looks set to go head-to-head with its former manufacturing partner Mercedes-Benz.

Whereas the current and previous model Crafter vans have been rebadged Sprinters fitted with VW engines, the new Crafter will be a completely different van.

All-new Volkswagen Crafter van

The all-new Volkswagen Crafter van — can it take the fight to the Sprinter?

Designed by VW and manufactured at a new factory in Poland, the new Crafter appears to address several of the current van’s weaknesses when set against the Sprinter.

New power plant

For example, whereas the Sprinter’s 2.1-litre power units is a scaled-down version of the engine used in Mercedes’ light trucks, the old Crafter’s 2.0-litre diesel is essentially the same as that used in its large cars and the Transporter van. Under heavy loads, the difference becomes apparent. The Sprinter’s torquey delivery makes it a more effective long distance load lugger.

While the engine in the new Crafter is still a 2.0-litre unit, Volkswagen was at pains to point out today that the new engine is a “commercial vehicle diesel engine”.  This new Euro 6 “EA 288Nutz” engine appears to be a versatile unit. It will be available with four power outputs, 102PS, 122PS and 140PS, plus a bi-turbo 177PS version.

Buyers will be able to choose between front, rear and all-wheel drive models, with VW’s 4MOTION system making its first appearance on a large van. There will also be a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes.

Size and space

The van itself will be available in three lengths and three heights and will feature an impressive array of safety systems. A new electro-mechanical steering system means that active driver assistance systems such as ESP with trailer stabilisation, ACC Adaptive Cruise Control, post-collision braking system, side wind compensation system and a trailer manoeuvring assistant system among others will all be available.

Inside, drivers will be cossetted in a cab that’s unmistakably Volkswagen. However, it looks very well endowed with storage and working space and should be a decent place to spend time:

Passive safety systems will include front, side and head airbags for the driver and passengers, plus an extensive range of warning systems. These include options for a reversing camera, parking distance monitor and the Rear Traffic Alert system.

Will the new Crafter be a winner?

It’s not often a completely new large van comes on the market. Volkswagen appears to be making a big commitment to the success of the new Crafter.

From what we know so far, the new van should be a potent package.

However, as always the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. How will the new Crafter rate with fleet operators and drivers? How reliable will it be, and how will total ownership costs compare with other similar models?

How well will VW’s support package compare to those of established large van manufacturers like Ford, Fiat Professional and Mercedes-Benz?

Zenith Volkswagen Crafter conversion

Leasing firm Zenith targets new customers with roadshow conversion

Leasing and fleet management specialist Zenith has taken delivery of a specially adapted Volkswagen Crafter long wheelbase van to use as a mobile exhibition and sales unit.

Volkswagen has published the first sketches showing what the all-new Volkswagen Crafter may look like.

All-new 2016 Volkswagen Crafter

First sketches of the all-new Volkswagen Crafter — due to be unveiled in September 2016

The German marque is breaking from past practice and designing an all-new vehicle that shares the same design DNA as the smaller Transporter van. This is a significant break from VW’s current practice of manufacturing the Crafter on the same production line as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and simply fitting their own engines and badging.

The all-new Crafter will be launched at the IAA Hanover commercial vehicle show in September 2016. But to whet buyers’ appetites ahead of the show and raise awareness of VW’s decision to go it alone, the company has released some artists’ sketches of the new van.

All-new Volkswagen Crafter rear view

According to VW, the new Crafter will have a best-in-class drag coefficient of 0.33 and will combine “great everyday practicality with optimum cargo space”. The design language will be continued across VW’s commercial range.

Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, is keen to emphasise the design links to the ever-popular Transporter:

“Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ T-series, the ‘Bulli’, is effectively being given a ‘big brother’ through the introduction of the new Crafter. With the Crafter, a level of surface quality, robustness and at the same time high qualitative value are achieved that have never before been available in this commercial vehicle class.”

According to Volkswagen, in-house experts have worked closely with current customers, frequently accompanying them during their daily routines, to explore their needs and find out their visions of what they wanted the new Crafter to be, allowing them to help shape the new generation.

More details to follow as they become available.

NIE Networks is responsible for managing 47,000 kilometres of overhead and underground cables that deliver electricity to 850,000 homes and businesses across Northern Ireland.

The company opted for the Crafter CR35 MWB panel van due to its ample load space, rear-wheel drive functionality to help access remote areas, and ability for bespoke conversion. Each Crafter will be equipped with specialist racking solutions, depending on purpose and equipment carried.

The new vehicles will be used within the connections side of the business, to help join new customers to the electricity network or alter existing connections for homes and businesses across the country.

As part of the NIE Networks’ commitment to its customers, a number of the new Crafters will be used as 24/7 emergency response vehicles. To help reduce costly vehicle downtime, Volkswagen’s award-winning aftercare support will provide a like-for-like courtesy vehicle if a van is off the road for more than a couple of hours.

David Corry, Supply Chain and Fleet Manager, NIE Networks, commented:

“As the network company, we have a responsibility to ensure homes and businesses across Northern Ireland have a reliable electricity supply. It was the reliability and the first-rate aftersales service offered by Volkswagen which helped to make it an easy decision when it came to replacing vehicles on the fleet. We have had excellent experience in the past with Volkswagen, and we’re pleased to continue the relationship.”

New Crafter vans deliver creature comforts for RSPCA

RSPCA VW Crafter vanThe RSPCA has taken delivery of six new Volkswagen Crafter vans, customised to carry up to nine animals in individual cages.

Each van has also been vinyl wrapped in colourful designs chosen from amongst the winners in a national school competition.

The vans themselves are short wheelbase Crafter CR30 2.0-litre TDI 136 PS BlueMotion models. They’re expected to transports 20,000 animals in need of care each year, saving the charity a staggering £800,000 per year.

Inside, the new vans have been carefully-modified to meet the needs of the RSPCA.

Adjustments include the load-space being fully sealed with a spray-on waterproof liner in order to enable the charity’s workers to easily wash out the vans after use, as well as the roofs of the vans being fitted with a ‘Flettner Ventilator’, in order to provide the animals in the back with a constant stream of fresh air.

The Crafters have also each been fitted with a total of nine bespoke cages, which vary in size to suit all animals, from a small cat to a large dog. All cages also have removable partitions between them to allow the RSPCA to pick up and transport more ‘unusual’ passengers.

Operational benefits for the RSPCA include low whole-life and running costs, and a fuel efficient engine that returns 39.8 mpg (combined) and emits only 187g/km of CO2, helping to cut the charity’s fuel costs and reduce emissions.
