Ford Expands Transit Econetic Range For 2011

Ford is to expand the range of Transit models that are available in Econetic form in 2011. Ford’s Econetic badging is used to signify the company’s lowest emission, most fuel efficient vehicles.

At present, only one Transit Econetic model is available, the FWD, short wheelbase, low roof 280 with a 115PS engine and a 1 tonne payload. 2011 will see this range of Econetic choices expanded to include longer wheelbase models and some other variants.

Ford is also introducing a new Euro V engine to replace the current Euro IV options in the Transit. This will bring the company in line with other panel van models, such as the Mercedes Sprinter  and Volkswagen Transporter, which are already available with a range of Euro V engine options. At present, only the current Transit Econetic is available with an engine that meets Euro V emissions standards.

Like other Ford Econetic models, the Transit Econetic uses a combination of altered gearing, engine mapping and aerodynamic changes to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These improvements are said to result in an approximate 10% improvement in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to the standard models.

The current Transit Econetic model has an official combined fuel consumption figure of 39.2mpg. As a comparison, the best I have managed in my (mk6) Transit is 37mpg, and that was lightly loaded and with much higher CO2 emissions, thanks to the older engine design. Whether many fleet drivers will achieve the official 39.2mpg figure is another question, but there should be a relative improvement in fuel consumption compared to the standard van models, in any case.

Renault Unveils Kangoo Electric Van

Renault will launch its latest electric van, the Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E. at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show. These are the first pictures of the all-electric version of the Kangoo’s larger brother, the Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E.. You can see the difference in size here:

Renault Kangoo Van Z.E. vs. Renault Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E.

Renault's two electric vans - the Kangoo Z.E. and the Kangoo Maxi Z.E.

The Kangoo Van Maxi’s 44kW electric motor is equivalent in power to a 60bhp diesel engine – but performance should be much zippier than it would with an equivalent diesel engine, due to the availability of maximum torque from a standstill. This characteristic of electric motors gives electric vehicles terrific acceleration when compared to internal combustion engines, which always have to build up some revs to reach maximum torque.Renault Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E. electric van at charging station

The loadspace is the same as in the standard models and the same options are available, too. The vans themselves will be built in the same factory in France as regular Kangoos. Prices start at £17,990 +VAT and there will also be a 5-seater crew cab version available. In common with several other electric vehicle manufacturers, Renault is maintaining control of the batteries – perhaps the part most likely to go wrong – by insisting that buyers pay a monthly rental charge for their batteries, regardless of whether they lease or buy the van. Battery rental starts at £59/mo +VAT for 9,000 miles per year and a 48 month contract.

Renault is certainly one of the leading contenders when it comes to real-world electric vehicles and the Kangoo Z.E. models appear to offer relative affordability and real-world usability. Range is about 100 miles and a typical charge should take 6-8 hours and cost £2.50, according to Renault. They claim that owners of the electric van will break even with the cost of running a diesel model (which is cheaper to purchase but more expensive to fuel) at 9,375 miles, after which the electric Kangoo will be cheaper to run.

Brittany Ferries Launches Portsmouth-Bilbao Ferry Route

Brittany Ferries is launching a new UK-Spain ferry route from Portsmouth to Bilbao.

In September 2010, P&O Ferries discontinued its Portsmouth – Bilbao ferry service. This meant that the only remaining option for UK-Spain ferries were Brittany Ferries’ services from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander.

Brittany Ferries is now expanding their choice of UK-Spain ferry routes with a new service – Portsmouth – Bilbao. It’s interesting that Brittany can (presumably) make it pay where P&O couldn’t, even on the same route…

The service will initially run from Portsmouth on Sundays and Fridays and from Bilbao on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The sailings will take 24 hours, except for the Sunday sailing which will call at Roscoff for supplies and a crew change and thus will take 32 hours.

If you are heading for the east coast of Spain (e.g. Valencia, Alicante, Murcia), then you will save a little time if you start from Bilbao. Similarly, the more westerly port of Santander might be a better starting place for the Algarve, but the difference is not huge as Bilbao and Santander are only around 60 miles apart.

The Brittany Ferries Portsmouth-Bilbao service starts running on 27th March 2011 – click here for more details.

Unusual Van Hire: Big Fat Gypsy Weddings Cake Transport

Hand up who has had a wedding cake that is so big it needs to be transported in a van? No, me neither.

However, over in the crazy world of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, it happens. A vast, pink, fairytale castle cake with more than 60kg of icing alone and towers about 3 feet high. The cake makers had to hire a van to get it to the wedding.

Of course, I only know this because my wife likes to watch this program…
