Micheldever chooses Renault Master for updated Protyre fleet

Protyre customers are increasingly likely to have their tyres delivered in Renault Master vans from now on, thanks to a 100-van order that will replace a third of the company’s existing fleet.

Protyre’s parent company, Micheldever Tyre & Auto Services, has ordered the new vans to replace vehicles from another manufacturer. The Master’s generous payload, good value and comprehensive four-year, 100,000 mile warranty helped Renault to win the sale.

Malcolm Turnbull, Group Fleet Manager, Micheldever Tyre & Auto Services, said:

“Against the other LCVs we considered, the Renault Master was unrivalled when it came to its combination of price and payload. The vans we have taken delivery of have arrived with us on schedule and, now that they are starting to be operative in the field, are exceeding our expectations and generating some good feedback from our drivers.”

On the distribution side, the Masters will contribute to the delivery of tyres to the 8,000 nationwide retailers that Micheldever Tyre & Auto Services supplies from its network of 15 distribution sites.

Meanwhile the specially-equipped Master breakdown vehicles will provide private and business customers with an emergency and comprehensive mobile tyre fitting service that encompasses tyre replacement and puncture repair on virtually any car, van, truck or agricultural vehicle.

Protyre’s new Masters are long-wheelbase, high-roof format (LH35) models, with front-wheel drive. Powered by Renault’s 2.3-litre dCi turbodiesel engine, they produce 125 hp and boast an official combined fuel consumption figure of 35 mpg.

To provide the optimum level of comfort and safety for Protyre’s drivers, the new vans were ordered in Business specification. This includes DAB radio with Bluetooth, electric front windows, remote central locking, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with HSA (Hill Start Assist) and Grip Xtend; a traction control system which provides improved traction on loose surfaces such as gravel, light snow and mud.

Other options chosen by Micheldever include 270-degree opening, unglazed rear doors and a 68 mph speed limiter. The breakdown vehicles have also been equipped with onboard, engine-driven compressors and full tyre changing facilities to Micheldever’s bespoke specification.

UK CV production wobbles in April as Euro demand weaknes

I commented last month on how a drop in domestic demand for UK-built vans and trucks had caused UK commercial vehicle production to drop 13% in March.

In April it was the turn of our European customers to hesitate. An 11.2% drop in export demand pushed total UK CV production down by 0.9% to 8,548 units, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Weaker European demand was however offset by a 13.6% rise in UK demand, which rose to 4,047 units.

What this shows, of course, is that one month’s data does not make a trend. Large fleet orders and seasonal factors can easily push CV demand up or down by a few hundred units each month, without signifying any change in overall market conditions.

However, Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive sounded a cautious note when commenting on the outlook for the rest of the year (my bolding):

“Although April saw a slight decrease in CV production, the sector continues to perform well with positive year-to-date figures. Following the substantial rise in volumes last year, we can expect production growth to ease slightly over coming months. However, with continued demand for British-built vans and trucks at home and around the world, the sector’s outlook is positive.”

At present, the overall trend remains positive — just. UK CV manufacturing output is up by 0.4% so far in 2016, as changes in home and export demand have largely offset each other:

It’s too early to get a clear idea of the trend for the year at this point, I’d suggest, although the situation certainly seems a little less clear cut than last year, as this graph shows:

Nissan NV300

Nissan hints at fresh style for NV300

Nissan has given van buyers their first taste of the firm’s new NV300 van, which will replace the Primastar.

Like the Primastar, the NV300 will be built on the Renault Trafic production line in France. It will essentially be a rebadged version of the popular Renault model. However, Nissan was at pains today to emphasise the new styling of the vehicle and the teaser photo does suggest that it will have distinctively Nissan-like front end:

According to the Japanese firm, “Nissan’s latest Emotional Geometry design language – well-known from its class-leading Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail crossovers – is clear to see on the NV300, with the familiar ‘V-motion’ grille dominating the front end.”

The van should gain some useful exposure among potential buyers thanks to Nissan’s role as the Official Light Commercial Vehicle Partner of the UEFA Champions League.

When it arrives in showrooms in the autumn, the NV300 will extend Nissan’s LCV range, which already includes the smaller NV200, the Renault Master-based NV400 plus the new Navara pickup and the zero-emission electric e-NV200.

However, in my view the NV300’s biggest attraction over its Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro stablemates will be its market-leading warranty. Nissan is offering a unique five-year/100,000-mile pan-European, manufacturer-backed policy that’s fully transferrable to second and subsequent owners. It includes five years’ roadside assistance cover.

In contrast, Renault’s 4+ package provides similar cover for four years. Vauxhall only guarantees new Vivaro vans for three years. For this reason alone, I’d be tempted to buy a NIssan NV300 rather than a Vivaro or Trafic.

However, I doubt that a generous warranty package alone will be enough to steal the Trafic and Vivaro’s established share of the SME and fleet market. The NV300 is also a relative latecomer in this segment, as it won’t go on sale in the UK until autumn 2016.

Automatic vans are still something of a rarity, despite growing demand. So it’s good to hear that Mercedes-Benz is now introducing an automatic version of its Citan small van.

From June 2016, selected Citan 112 variants will be available to order with the new 6G-DCT automatic transmission. As I understand it, this is an automated manual transmission, rather than a traditional torque converter auto.

The six-speed dual-clutch transmission consists of two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch. As one transmits drive to the wheels, the other has pre-selected the next gear. This allows for near seamless gear changes without loss of tractive power, high levels of driving comfort and convenience.

Automated manuals like this are increasingly popular on larger goods vehicles and cars, as they tend to offer better fuel consumption than torque converters and — for goods vehicles — can cope with heavier loads.

Unfortunately, the Citain will only be available as an auto when fitted with the 112 petrol engine. This will limit the uptake of the auto box as most buyers still opt for diesel.

However, if you’re in the market for an automatic petrol van, the Citan 112 6G-DCT will be available to order from June 2016 in long wheelbase panel van and tourer configurations. Official combined cycle fuel consumption is 44.1mpg, while CO2 emissions will be 144g/km.

Used van values hit new record in April

The average value of used vans sold by auctioneers BCA rose to £5,966 in April, according to the latest figures from the firm.

That’s 1.4% more than in March and the highest monthly figure on record since 2005. On a year-on-year basis, April’s prices were 8.3% higher than at the same point last year, suggesting used van prices have risen well ahead of inflation.

However, potential buyers should note that the average age and mileage of used vans is falling. The average van sold in 2016 was four months younger and had 3,400 fewer miles than at this point last year. That goes some way to offsetting the average rise in value of £458 seen over the last twelve months.

BCA’s LCV Operations Director, Duncan Ward commented:

“Buyers were out in force in April with both physical and online bidders competing strongly for the stock on offer.  Values are well ahead of where they were a year ago, underlining the evolution in price performance which has been driven by high levels of demand.”

Despite obviously strong market conditions, it’s worth noting that these headline gains are mostly the result of strong demand for one-owner ex-fleet and lease vehicles up to five years old. These form the bulk of BCA’s volumes and are in strong demand as they are normally well maintained and ready for a second life with a new owner.

The value of older, part-exchange vans is flat, suggesting that a stronger economy and good credit availability may be reducing demand for this type of van. Mr Ward confirmed that quality and falling age in the mid market is driving average used prices higher:

“Average values continue to rise for fleet/lease commercials, with both professional buyers and end users focussing on one owner vehicles up to five years old.  Both age and mileage for corporate vans continues to drop and this is contributing to the steady price evolution seen over the past year.   The better grade vans are selling strongly and making good money, while vehicles requiring work need to be priced in line with market sentiment to sell first time.”

The RSPCA’s newest ‘Networking Project’ van features the work of Kitty Wright from Derby, who was the youngest winner of the RSPCA’a national school competition.

The new van is a Volkswagen Crafter that’s been wrapped in a Kitty’s colourful winning design. It’s one of six Crafters the RSPCA will use to transport animals around the country as part of the charity’s rehoming programme. By moving animals around the UK to even out supply and demand, the RSPCA should be able to rehome more animals, more quickly.

The converted short wheelbase CR30 2.0-litre TDI 136 PS BlueMotion Crafter vans feature a bespoke load-carrying area that allows the charity to transport the animals and equipment safely between shelters in England and Wales. Each van has been fully lined with a waterproof material to aid with cleaning and hygiene, and fitted with a ‘Flettner Ventilator to ensure constant fresh air for the animals as well as nine bespoke cages that can be adapted in size, depending on the animals being transported.

A number of the vehicles will be on display at this year’s RSPCA ‘Big Walkies’ event in Hyde Park in London on 26 May, offering visitors a chance to see the winning designs up close. Between now and then the RSPCA and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are encouraging people to take and share pictures of the vans on social media (@Volkswagen_CV) when they see them out and about on the roads.

Van market motors ahead in April as with 11.8% increase in new registrations

After a slower start to the year, new LCV registrations rose by 11.8% to 27,880 in April, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Once more large vans (2.5-3.5t) drove demand, with registrations up by 22.8% in April to 17,660 units. That’s 63% of all vans and pickups registered last month. Here’s how new van registrations have risen over the last six years:

Ford topped the sales tables once again, selling 8,219 vans last month, twice as many as second-placed Volkswagen with 4,194 vans. Vauxhall’s Made in Britain status helped its range into a worthy third place, with 3,430 van registered in April.

Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive said:

“Following a quieter start to 2016, it is positive to see the van market picking up with a third consecutive month of growth in April, once again fuelled by increased demand for larger LCVs. The 3.3% rise in registrations during the first four months of the year places the sector in a strong position and on track to maintain stable growth throughout 2016.”

So far this year, new van registrations have risen by 3.3% to 126,786 units, with growth being driven by large vans and pickups, which are now the third-biggest selling class of light commercial vehicle in the UK. A total of 15,560 new pickups have been registered so far in 2016, pushing the sub-2.0t van class into fourth place, with 13,727 new units registered.

UK-built Tevva electric trucks clock up 30,000 miles in six months

I first wrote about UK firm Tevva Motors back in January. Since then, the firm’s three test trucks have been in daily use and have now clocked up almost 30,000 miles between them.

Tevva’s powertrain is fitted to two converted JAC N-series trucks (JAC is a large Chinese manufacturer) and has also been retrofitted to a Mercedes-Benz Vario. All three vehicles are in daily use with parcel giant UPS, which is using and managing the trucks in the same way as the rest of its fleet.

Each vehicle has Tevva’s next-generation electric range extender powertrain, which Tevva says is capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, compared to an average 7.5 tonne diesel engine truck.

Range extenders work but combining an electric powertrain with a petrol or diesel-powered generator, which can be run to provide electrical power to keep the battery topped up on longer journeys. One of the key advantages is that the engine required is much smaller than it would be if it was used to power the vehicle directly. Tevva’s 7.5 tonne trucks have a 1.6-litre diesel engine fitted in place of the standard model’s 3.8-litre diesel engine.

Tevva’s powertrain uses the firm’s patented Predictive Range Extender Management System (PREMS) to work out the optimum time to run the batteries during a pre-planned route. For example, PREMS would ensure the batteries were charged to allow electric operation in urban areas before running the engine to top up the batteries during out-of-town driving. This offers significant benefits in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

According to a recent review, the PREMS system has three modes, which provide varying levels of charge, depending on the state of the batteries and expected power requirements.

Tevva’s does not expect to start producing its own new trucks for another couple of years. However, the firm’s powertrain is now available as a retrofit package for customers who would like to fit it to existing trucks.

Range extender systems have always seemed to me a good medium-term solution to address range limitations of all-electric vehicles. As I’ve mentioned many times before, delivery vans and trucks are ideal candidates for electrification because they tend to do limited mileages on set routes each day, before returning to base each night where they can be charged.

Back to base trucks doing urban deliveries are Tevva’s target market. The potential benefits seem clear, so it will be interesting to see whether any of the big fleet operators — most notably trial partner UPS — can be persuaded to take up this system.

Another highlight of the show was the long-awaited return of LDV vans. Now in Chinese hands, LDV were back in force with an updated version of the old Maxus the V80, plus the smaller G10 and an all-electric V80 with a promised range of 217 miles.
