BCA van auction

Used van prices slip lower as buyers opt for new models

BCA van auctionThe average sale price of used vans at auction fell by 0.7% to £5,544 in July, according to BCA auctions.

Weaker prices were the results of tempting deals on new vans and ample supply, coupled with a mix of poorer-quality used stock, according to Duncan Ward, who is BCA’s Head of Commercial Vehicles:

“Not only have volumes risen in the wholesale markets with some questions over poor condition stock, the new van market is very buoyant and there are some very tempting deals about.  Buyers have more choice now than they have experienced at any time this year and are understandably focussing on the best presented vehicles.”

The graph below shows how after peaking last year, used van prices have stagnated in the face of booming new van registrations:

BCA used LCV sale prices June 2013 - July 2015

The most signficant change in Juyly was seen in the ex-fleet and lease sector, where the average LCV sale price fell by 2.6% to £6,280, despite slightly lower average mileage.

It’s buyers of these vans who are most likely to be tempted by attractive deals on new vans:

As I’d expect, average sale prices for cheaper part-exchange vans were broadly flat, at £3,723. Buyers of these vans are less likely to consider new vans as an alternative to buying used.

Move house like a pro with these top 10 tips

Let us show you how to move house with a hire van

Boxes need to be strong to be stacked safely – especially if they’re heavy. Stack heavy items at the front and bottom.

Sky-high property prices mean that a whopping 19% of Brits don’t think they will ever be able to afford to buy their own home.

Even for those lucky enough to be able to save for a deposit and secure a mortgage, the stress and hidden costs of moving can be tough to deal with.

10% of couples will argue when moving house, while 3% of those questioned in a new survey even said they’ve broken up with a partner during a house move.

These figures, from a new survey by Budget Van Rental, highlight how emotionally charged moving house can become.

One reason for this is that packing — and unpacking — can take much longer than expected and result in unforeseen loss and damage if not done correctly. On average, house movers start packing 13 days before their moving date, but some are living out of cardboard boxes for as long as 60 days.

Movers often aren’t in a rush to unpack, either. It takes an average of 45 days for movers to unpack fully in their new home.

Of course, the easiest way to move is to pay a professional removals firm to pack, move and unpack for you — but this kind of service doesn’t come cheap.

If you’re moving house on a budget and are planning to use a hired van for the majority of the move, then here are some tips to help you avoid the most common problems.

Tips for moving

Here are celebrity declutter Vicky Silverthorn’s top 10 house moving tips:

  1. Make a list – start it early, include deadlines and keep one list in one place so it doesn’t get mislaid during the upheaval.
  2. Get a folder – it sounds obvious but it’ll be your ‘go to’ place during the whole process of moving home.
  3. Book a van – don’t try and squeeze everything into a car as you’ll often end up making several wasteful journeys. Think about what size van you need and book early, as do one third (29%) of relocating Brits.
  4. Recruit friends and family – get dates in the diary so you aren’t left shifting everything by yourself. Over a quarter (28%) of people moving home call in favours from their nearest and dearest.
  5. Declutter your belongings – recycle, rubbish and charity bags at the ready, particularly if you’re one of the 10% of Brits who transport items to their new property by foot or public transport. Work day-by-day, doing little and often.
  6. Declutter your furniture – be ruthless and think about what will work in your new home. Arrange collection, disposal, or resale using sites such as eBay, Gumtree and Freecycle.
  7. Pack smartly
  8. Don’t forget your post – add all companies you’ll need to notify of your new address to your list, or set up mail redirection through Royal Mail for 3, 6 or 12 months.
  9. Make sure your essentials are easily accessible on moving day – tea-making equipment is a must if you’re like one third (31%) of home movers who stick the kettle on as soon as they get into their new pad.
  10. Make sure you factor in enough time to unpack – don’t underestimate this. If you think you need two days off work for moving, then take off four. Bear in mind it takes an average of 45 days to completely unpack.

The new truck features an updated interior and exterior, along with a new 2.3-litre dCi engine and an attractive five year or 100,000 mile warranty. Ride and handling are also improved, while the load bed and towing capacity remain amongst the best-in-class.

Here are the main highlights, plus some pictures.

Engine: New 2.3-litre dCi diesel offered with a choice of 160PS or 190PS power outputs. Nissan says the new engine is up to 24% more efficient than the unit it repalces. The 190PS version uses twin-turbo technology, for the first time in the pick-up sector.

The new model will launch with the choice of two or four-wheel drive and the option of a standard six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Ride and handling: Nissan was targeting a ride experience more like that of a Crossover (SUV/car) and has introduced a new five-link rear suspension for double cab models which the firm says provides significantly improved ride plus weighs 20kg less.

Improved ride and handling for the NP300 Navara

The new NP300 Navara should offer improved ride and handling, according to Nissan.

Safety: A range of new safety systems are available, including Forward Emergency Braking and Nissan’s Around View Monitor. Hill Descent Control, Cruise Control and Hill Start Assist are also on offer, along with parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Interior & styling: On the outside, changes include a new grill and boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, with the goal being a “rugged yet sporty overall style”. In other words, this is aimed at leisure buyers as well as those in need of a workhorse.

[EXPIRED] SAVE 5% on Questor Van Hire Excess Insurance

vanrental.co.uk vanThe most stressful part of hiring a van (or car) is often the concern that you will do some damage and be presented with a large bill for repairs from the hire company after you have returned the van.

Most insurance companies do offer additional insurance cover which reduces their insurance excess to nil, but very often this insurance doesn’t cover tyres or glass damage. It’s usually very expensive.

An increasingly popular alternative solution is to buy car or van hire excess insurance from a seperate company. This can work out to be much cheaper, too.

If this is something that you’re considering, we have a 5% discount code for Questor van hire excess insurance at the moment:

New Crafter vans deliver creature comforts for RSPCA

RSPCA VW Crafter vanThe RSPCA has taken delivery of six new Volkswagen Crafter vans, customised to carry up to nine animals in individual cages.

Each van has also been vinyl wrapped in colourful designs chosen from amongst the winners in a national school competition.

The vans themselves are short wheelbase Crafter CR30 2.0-litre TDI 136 PS BlueMotion models. They’re expected to transports 20,000 animals in need of care each year, saving the charity a staggering £800,000 per year.

Inside, the new vans have been carefully-modified to meet the needs of the RSPCA.

Adjustments include the load-space being fully sealed with a spray-on waterproof liner in order to enable the charity’s workers to easily wash out the vans after use, as well as the roofs of the vans being fitted with a ‘Flettner Ventilator’, in order to provide the animals in the back with a constant stream of fresh air.

The Crafters have also each been fitted with a total of nine bespoke cages, which vary in size to suit all animals, from a small cat to a large dog. All cages also have removable partitions between them to allow the RSPCA to pick up and transport more ‘unusual’ passengers.

Operational benefits for the RSPCA include low whole-life and running costs, and a fuel efficient engine that returns 39.8 mpg (combined) and emits only 187g/km of CO2, helping to cut the charity’s fuel costs and reduce emissions.

UK CV manufacturing output rises by 46.3% in July

UK commercial vehicle manufacturing output rose by 46.3% to 9,274 units in July, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The SMMT figures show that this year’s strong recovery in volumes has continued through the summer, with rising exports providing an additional boost.

CV manufacturing Jul-14 Jul-15 % Change YTD-14 YTD-15 % Change
Total 6,338 9,274 46.3% 43,798 57,967 32.4%
Home 2,125 5,048 137.6% 20,723 29,535 42.5%
Export 4,213 4,226 0.3% 23,075 28,432 23.2%
% export 66.5% 45.6% 51.2% 49.0%

Data courtesy of SMMT (www.smmt.co.uk)

July’s figures are a continuation of the recovery made by the sector throughout 2015, which has seen production levels grow by a third to 57,967 units. Volumes last year were impacted by some restructuring within the industry, as well as a spike in truck demand in 2013 related to type approval changes. This year’s growth comes off the back of increasing demand both domestically and abroad for UK-built CVs.

Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes, the SMMT chief executive, said:

“The commercial vehicle manufacturing sector’s impressive performance in July is further welcome evidence of its ongoing return to form. After a difficult year of regulatory upheaval, we’re now seeing demand for British-built vans, trucks and buses bounce back as fleet renewal patterns return to normal and the online delivery market continues to grow.”

This graph shows how UK CV manufacturing output and exports have changed since June 2008:

Ford Transit Supervan 3 Will Star At CarFest South

Ford’s legendary Transit Supervan 3 will make an appearance at CarFest South over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The 1994 Supervan is a reliable crowd pleaser thanks to its outrageous styling and to the presence of a 295 horsepower supercharged Ford Cosworth Pro Sports 3000 engine, which can propel the vehicle to more than 150mph.

(You can find out more about the Supervans here and see a video of the Supervan 3 in action at Goodwood here)

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Transit, the Supervan will be followed by Ford’s 50th anniversary special ‘Gold’ Transit Custom Sport Van, similar to the model in the picture below.

Among the other Ford highlights at CarFest South will be the Ford Mustang, which has recently become available in right-hand drive for the first time ever. A convertible version of the classic American muscle car will lead out the Ford vans at the head of the Ford parade:

The Ford Transit Owners Club will also be in at the show with a big display of “significant” Transits to celebrate the start of Transit production in August 1965.

CarFest South should be a great weekend, especially for Transit fans — but unfortunately it is already sold out!

Mercedes-Benz celebrates 20 years of Sprinter with special anniversary edition

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 20th AnniversaryRegular readers of this blog will be familiar with my admiration for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, something I share with a great many other British business owners, as well as every NHS ambulance trust.

The Sprinter has now been in production for 20 years, during which 327,201 Sprinter vans have been sold in the UK. To celebrate this milestone achievement, Mercedes is offering a 20th Anniversary special edition Sprinter for UK buyers.

A maximum of 1,200 of the vans will be available. Featuring Sprinter 20 badging on the front wing, they come with an attractive option bundle including air conditioning, sat nav, a Driver’s Comfort seat with arm rest, wheel trims, and a chrome grille. Ordered individually, this lot would normally cost more than £2,000, but the Sprinter 20 pack will be available for just £750.

The vast majority of Sprinter vans are sold as panel vans, often in the long and extra-long wheelbase versions favoured by couriers. In the UK, more than 250,000 of the Sprinters sold have been panel vans, with the remainder sold as chassis cab variants.

These are true million-mile vehicles. The highest-mileage van that’s still being serviced by the Mercedes dealer network is a 1999 Sprinter with 995,242 miles on the clock. There’s also a 2005 model with 964,436 miles on the clock, which equates to around 2,000 miles per week, every week, for ten years…

Although older vehicles tend to be serviced by independent garages, Mercedes does offer an incentive for owners willing to stay loyal to their dealer network. Every Mercedes-Benz Vans vehicle purchase comes with free 30-year MobiloVan roadside breakdown cover across the UK and Europe, as long as it is serviced by a Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Volkswagen targets urban explorers with Amaraok Atacama

Volkswagen Amarok Atacama

The Volkswagen Amarok Atacama

Seriously, it must take these car companies about 10 minutes to come up with ‘special editions’, such as yesterday’s Isuzu D-Max Fury.

Come to think of it, it’s an ideal post-pub activity:

  1. Tick a few boxes for desirable options
  2. Add some bling — chrome, oversize alloys and dubious decals are obligatory
  3. Make the inside a little more garish than usual
  4. Give it a naff name and a restricted choice of colours
  5. Knock a few hundred quid off the standard list price for the selected options
  6. Whip together a Photoshopped image (just look at it!) — no need for a real photoshoot

Bingo.

Today’s contribution hails from Germany. I give you the Volkswagen Amarok Atacama.

Hot on the heels of the Canyon, Edition, Dark Label and Ultimate editions of the Amarok, the Atacama is “Named after the vast desert region of South America”, and “features an equally broad and impressive specification”. Seriously, did someone get paid to come up with that?

Having said that, the Amarok is a classy piece of kit and the Atacama is nicely loaded up for your next rumble in the urban jungle.

On sale now through Volkswagen’s UK Van Centre network with prices starting from £26,850 +VAT, the Atacama is powered by a 2.0-litre BiTDI 180 PS engine with a choice of two transmissions: a six-speed manual with selectable 4MOTION four-wheel drive or an eight-speed automatic with permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard.

Available in three colours – Candy White, Horizon Blue and Deep Black – the Amarok Atacama comes with bi-xenon headlights, black rear styling bars, black rear bumper with integrated step and 19-inch ‘Cantera’ alloy wheels. The load bed features a ‘Durabed’ protective coating, while distinctive black foil finish on the B-pillars and unique ‘Atacama’ side decals complete the design package.

Inside, the Amarok Atacama boasts luxurious Vienna leather upholstery, a newly designed leather multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity and Climatronic 2-Zone air conditioning. There’s also a standard RNS310 sat nav system.

There’s lots to like, and it’s probably cheaper than specifying the same thing at list price.
